Quite the beauty that you present here , the jay has become quite an familiar and endearing bird from the presentaitons ayou and some of our other TN friends have made.This is wonderful protrait showing superb details and a very interesting Pov.It blue colours with the light falling tend to take on a silver colour.Very well done.

How you managed this close up is beyond me. I cannot even get near a Jay.
The catchlight is perfect.Details and the DOF are as well.That little bit of deep green behind just makes it so nice.

Hi Claudine,

These birds do have strong personalities, as a relative of the Magpie it is understandable. I like the call of the Blue Jay though, quite haunting.

This is a nice enough portrait but I think honestly it's not one of your best. I'm assuming it is cropped from a larger image which has left the detail a little soft. Good colours and good depth of field, a good catchlight in the eye. A little over-exposure around the Jay's face.

The banding in the background is due to jpeg compression. If there is a lot of information/detail in the image, compressing it to post online removes some of that information, which means removing colour information. What you can see is the number of colours in the image being reduced, and therefore the transition between shades of light and dark becomes more obvious. The more the image needs to be compressed, the more information is lost. There is also some colour information lost around the Jay's face, the brighter areas have broken up into just a few shades.

Editing an image in 8-bit mode can also contribute to this, as there are not as many colours available in 8-bit as in 16-bit. Always try and edit in 16-bit, do not change to 8-bit until you want to save a version to post. I try to keep images in 16-bit mode right until I do the 'save for web'.
