Hi Folks , today I have these two ants , for a great read on ants I would strongly recommend checking out the wikipedia write up , some very fascinating stuff there.

one thing that struck me as amazing is that it said that ants make up 25% of the biomass on our planet , to think that there are so many of these small insects to do that is really something.

these two where on a plant that grows at the side of my house , the weather is bad and I did not want to stray far with my camera and risk rain...

my equipment listed for today is not accurate , I did shoot with the 105mm macro , but also used the tc20 II converter , which is a two times tele-converter , I also used the sb-600 flash , I went to the Calgary this morning to get them.

the tele-converter works ok on the 105mm macro , but it does not allow for auto focus , I would have to have a pro camera like the d3 and then it would still only auto focus on certain lenses ( not the macro though ).

these ants are quite small between 3-5mm , I shot at the minimum focus distance which is about 12 inches , so I must have been near double a 1:1 ratio , I don't know is that 2:1 or 1:2 ? I am not really sure on that but think 1:2 sounds right.

most notable about the converter is that it drastically affects the lens speed , dropping from 2.8 to 5.6 , and that is at further distance, in close it is around f9. the field depth takes a pounding too , but I think that would go for any macro at 210mm so that is not of much consequence . since I prefer a deeper field the f-stop is not much problem either I normally would not shoot a macro at less than f 16 and mostly aim a lot higher.

the converter plus the flash added considerable weight to my camera , I shot free hand , but still felt that I was not coming up with a clear image , I am not yet sure if it is the converter , or the other factors , very low light , wind , hand held , and a very tiny insect . I did get a shot of a fly from further than 12 inches and the details / sharpness look really good , so I will have to give the converter a real try out.

well last thing to say is that I would really give a thought to stopping in at the wiki to read their write up on ants , it is really quite interesting , but a bit long.

thanks for stopping in.
regards
Art
