That Cedar Waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum, 18 cm) seems to wear sunglasses. Shot earlier this year in the Parc Nature Pointe-aux-Prairies in Montreal.

The Cedar Waxwing is one of the most frugivorous birds in North America. Many aspects of its life, from its nomadic habits to its late breeding season, may be traced to its dependence upon fruit.
Description
Medium-sized songbird.
Gray-brown overall.
Crest on top of head.
Black mask edged in white.
Yellow tip to tail; may be orange.
Size: 14-17 cm (6-7 in)
Wingspan: 22-30 cm (9-12 in)
Weight: 32 g (1.13 ounces)
Sex Differences
Sexes nearly alike.
Sound
Calls are very high pitched "bzeee" notes.
Conservation Status
Populations increasing throughout range. You can help scientists learn more about this species by participating in the Celebrate Urban Birds! project.
Other Names
Jaseur d' Amérique (French)
Ampelis Americano, Picotera, Chinito (Spanish)
Cool Facts
The name "waxwing" comes from the waxy red appendages found in variable numbers on the tips of the secondaries of some birds. The exact function of these tips is not known, but they may serve a signaling function in mate selection.
Cedar Waxwings with orange instead of yellow tail tips began appearing in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada beginning in the 1960s. The orange color is the result of a red pigment picked up from the berries of an introduced species of honeysuckle. If a waxwing eats the berries while it is growing a tail feather, the tip of the feather will be orange.
The Cedar Waxwing is one of the few temperate dwelling birds that specializes in eating fruit. It can survive on fruit alone for several months. Unlike many birds that regurgitate seeds from fruit they eat, the Cedar Waxwing defecates fruit seeds.
The Cedar Waxwing is vulnerable to alcohol intoxication and death after eating fermented fruit.

Hi Mario,

I love your title. He kind of reminds me of Jack Nicholson - but the Waxwing is much prettier. The plummage is a wonderful contrast to the darkness surrounding the bird. Beautiful colors and great details and a very effective shot.

Hi Mario
Cool shot with lovely natural color and fine detail
tfs jon

Although I had never seen one of these in person...nor I think in image, before you introduced them to me...I have a tendency now to like them very much...There are about 5 of the birds which I like...in your camera and eyes..and this is one of them..Cardinal in snow...some birds on the Boreal forest...the Jay of course..and the one I forget which looks like a gold and green...and a couple more but this one is an addition now:-)

Mario

Superb work as usual! The pose and eye contact you caught here is great. It looks like this guy was on his way to the beach - sun glasses on and ready! Very cool picture Mario. Top notch work. TFS.

Best Regards,

Martin

salut Mario

Hi Mario

Lovely image - great pose combined with sharp detail and lovely colour.

James

Hello Mario, give him a little snow and he looks like he would be ready for the slopes. Very good observation and capture on your part. Very nicely composed shot of this Waxwing, with excellent colour and sharp detail. Exposure has been handled very well with very excellent depth of field to isolate the bird from his background.

Thanks, John

Francine

Salut Mario

Hi Mario,
I don't know how this Ray-ban effect came about, but it is absolutely fascinating to see this picture. It is of course an artistic use of subdued winter light from the side that brings it about. I like the result a lot.
My best regards
Dietrich

Hi Mario,
Very beautiful,congratulation.
Ralf

Hi Mario,
Good sense of humour here... A handsome guy your Cedar Waxwing...These birds are really beautiful, like his european cousin, the Bohemian Waxwing (Bombycilla garrulus).
And what to say about the picture? Simply excellent, as usual...
TFS, Marta

Bonjour Mario,

Pierre
