[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hi Folks, this is misumena vatia , the goldenrod crab spider , which I found lurking on a Canada Anemone flower. For a moment I thought that I would get to photograph it with its meal , but a smal josteling of its resting place and it dropped the little moth it had been eating , but at least for the first time I did get to see one eating so that was close :-)

the spider is named after the goldenrod flower on which it is commonly found , it is capable of changing its color between white as seen here , and yellow , by forcing pigmentation to the surface of its skin. on flowers of color other than white or yellow this spider will be quite noticeable.

this is a female of the species , quite a bit larger than the male , it spends its time just like this , fixated on its next meal. some times this meal will be the next poor male spider that happens along looking to mate.

as a spider it is of course capable of spinning webs , but they are not used for hunting , the web of the female is used to secure and protect eggs , the web of the male is actually used to restrain the female during coupling.

the female will actively guard her egg sack , but will also die before they hatch.

thanks for stopping in
regards
