Scarlet Beetle
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Hi Folks , on todays walk I found this beetle , it is called a Scarlet Malachite Beetle , it is found in weedy fields , or maybe your flower bed ;-) , it feeds on flower visiting insects and/or pollen ,also will feed on larvae .
while searching for an id for this insect I found that in my province of Alberta it is listed as a ' wheat destroying insect' but that some areas consider it a declining species , I found a number of references to the "Scarlet Malachite Beetle Project" , but the two links I tried to follow turned up to be '401 page not found' so I am not really sure what that is all about. it seemed to be a project in the UK to preserve rare beetles.
the beetle was not very rare in the field across from my home . cause I was shooting hand held I took enough shots to be sure to get some good ones , like ussual I experimented with different settings as well.
I am going to post a different perspective to the workshop , a bit shallow of field, but a nice view of this critters smile :-) the workshop photo was shot at f/18 from fairly close in.
thanks for stopping in
regards

Hi Art
good capture and composition, I like the way the insect is on the flower, and with his body full of pollen !
nice colors, and good sharpness.

Hello Art,
recently, I took a picture of a European Malachius on the same flower and therefore I know
that it is not so easy to achieve a suitable picture of the 'hairy' Malachiidae.
All the more, I appreciate your nice picture which is sharp down to pollen-size and presents
the beetle in an excellent way.
Best wishes, Peter

hello Art,
Very interesting this picture! I think it is the first time we see the scarlet form of the Malachite Beetle. I didn't know that it was destroying wheat. I have seen the same beetle very close to my house too. They are in fact some wheat plants there. The picture is well composed, the beetle excellentely sharp, if we consider the size of this small beetle. Very pleasant colour-combination too.
Thanks and best regards
Anne
Hello Art,
Very fine macro with good closeness on the beetle!

Hi Art
I like the beetle being covered in pollen and the yellow flower provides a lovely backdrop. Nicely seen and captured.
Cheers
Sue
Very skillful macro work in my opinion, Art. Exposure/focusing spot-on. Every pollen grain can be counted! The yellow stamen/petals make a great background/foreground.
