[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hi Folks , today's up load is this cedar waxwing found in my favorite woods. I have before referred to my 'favorite woods' truth be known they are the ones that are close to me :-) I am not having a large selection of forested area's or anything like that , it is a fair sized forested area with many pathways and lots of nature to be seen , one only needs to bring a camera , and a measure of stealth to get a nature photo :-)

the waxwings along these pathways are shy birds , they seldom see people and certainly do not have need to tolerate our nearness , when I saw them it was through bushes and getting photos was quite awkward . much attempt to shorten the distance would see them simply fly to an area that the pathways are not near...

a couple of things from the wiki on cedar waxwings , the name cedar waxwing comes from this birds fondness for the small cones of the Eastern Red cedar , their main diet is berries and fruit , in spring time before much is growing the waxwings will be seen around town making short work of berry and apple trees. when mating they will also take to eating insects , I would imagine that is for added protein. they tend to feed in flocks , if there are berries or fruit on a single limb that the flock can not all get to the waxwings will actually pass the fruit down from bird to bird to see that it is shared . when mating they will be seen passing a flower pedal or insect back and forth between the mates, also they will rub their beaks together in affection during courtship.

when migrating the flocks resemble the flock movement of the European starling , but I highly doubt the flock sizes are at all comparable.
some other names given to this bird are, Southern Waxwing, Canada Robin, Cedar Bird, Cherry Bird, or Recellet.

of the birds in my area I find the cedar waxwing to one of the most pretty . though if I had a berry or fruit tree I was fond of , I may feel differently :-)

in the U.S. the cedar waxwing is protected by law , and is not allowed to be kept in captivity.

Hi Art. This is a bird i would love to see. I like the black stripe on the face and the yellow and red tips to the fetahers. which your fine shot shows so well. good natural colours set of by the plain grey BG. well done TFS.

Beautiful photo of this Cedar Waxwing. Splendid colours and a good sharpness. I would have cropped a piece from the left to get the bird more out of the centre. Good DOF and BG.

I love this bird which I have seen only in pictures. Beautiful shot with the Waxwing posing so nicely for you. Colors are wonderful and details are razor sharp. I love the centered composition even though I know others might object. Really lovely.

That's definitely a very good shot - its very well executed. It's got great sharpness, detail and background. The only thing I'd change is what Peter already mentioned - I think cropping the bird 'off-center' would help the composition. Other than that, great work. TFS.

Hi Art,
very good image of this waxwing. composition could have been better, as already mentioned, could have used little more space to the right.
I feel this lacks little bit of sharpness. But great colors, majestic pose of the bird, nice BG. Why go for iso 400, was it necessary, f5.6 at 1/250 should have been ok. TFS.

Hi Art,
You say this is shy bird yet thius is a superb capture of the cedar waxwing.And i guess you always have a great time there around your limited forest area.We are not as lucky in this part of the world, atleast in my city.I will have to go out to some of the reserves to find out if i can get some realcatches..otheriwse i have to make do with macros.:)
The capture is superb with very fine details, good eye contact and well complimeting coloured BG.I am sure the lights werent going that great for you....but you have managed to get a nice catchlight in that eye..yet another difficult measure considering the black pacth around its eyes..The composition is beautiful and even the way you got the initials signed in red compliemnts the little hint of similar red at the tip of its wings.Very well done.
