En été, le merlebleu est insectivore, il se nourrit de larves, de chenilles, d'araignées et de libellules. La base de son alimentation se compose de criquets et de sauterelles. À la fin de l'été et le début de l'automne, il devient frugivore. Son régime alimentaire se compose alors surtout des fruits de l'amélanchier, du sorbier et du sureau. Il ne délaisse pas non plus les bleuets et les cerises.
