Hi All,
Lucy and I came upon this Common Nighthawk on our evening drive out at Jenner. We are always amazed at how close these birds allow you to come, as they rest waiting for dusk to begin their nightly feeding frenzy.

Common Nighthawk
Chordeiles minor
General Description

By Ken Oakes

The Common Nighthawk is a summer resident on most of the North American continent, and can be found throughout Alberta. Being nocturnal it is usually observed in flight at dusk.

It arrives in our province in late May and leaves for Mexico and Central South America by the end of August.

It is attracted to open areas, especially near water, where it can find the wide varietry of insects it feeds on. Insects drawn to urban lighting can also attract it. It feeds on the wing, swooping and diving and changing direction as it scoops up flying insects.

Nesting is done directly on the ground, on sand, rock, gravel or leaf litter, perhaps close to boulders or shrubs. The female broods the eggs for 19 to 20 days with some assistance by the male. The young are fed by both parents and leave the nest at 30 days.

Hello Rick,
Excellent close capture of this Nighthawk! I never knew they were 'easy' to get near. I've only seen it a couple of times, once well hidden, the other time at night flying. A strange bird very nicely in focus here - it always looks so sleepy! :-)
TFS and regards, Ulla

Unusual. I had a friend back in the 1970's whose 'handle' on the CB radio was Nighthawk. Until this very moment it never occurred to me that there was such a thing. I may have seen these but not known what they were. How intriguing. I am always learning something new or something which reminds me of the past. Very good then. It is now etched into my brain. And welcome back from your muddy adventure. Would make a good TV show:-) With a stand-in actor for your part of course.
Bob

Hi Rick,

A new bird for me! Not only haven't I seen one before, I haven't heard of them. Wonderful to be able to get so close and to get such a fine shop. Excellent details of his unusual face, eye, and plummage. I love the colors and shadings.

Rick,

What a find! I only know this bird from my 'birding book', I've never seen one before.. It is interesting that you can approach it so closely. From what I read, it relies heavily on camouflage to stay well hidden during the day. Maybe it thinks that you just can't see it and allows a close approach ? In any event, you've done a wonderful job here. Thanks for sharing this shot - it is nice to see how it looks like in the real life vs a painting in a book. Great job.

Best Regards,

Martin

Hi Rick

Lovely shot of this Nighthawk - great pose and detail here. A very lucky sighting.

Hi Rick, I've never seen a Common Nighthawk, so thanks for the introduction here. Without knowing a lot about the bird, it sort of reminds me of the Nightjars seen in Australia. We have a Tawny Frogmouth that I've seen here a couple of times. It seems to have a very similar temperment, and camouflage look to it. You have good close detail on this one, you've gotta love the variations seen in that plumage. Very nicely seen and captured.

Thanks, John

Hello Rick,
Superb capture of a Common Nighthawk. I know that they stay put during the day but the European species is hard to find. So it always impresses me when I see such a fine sharp close shot and it makes me a little envious.
Thanks for sharing this great shot that is a joy to view,
Ivan

That's a beautiful bird Rick. I'd miss that for sure with it's camoflage. Strange it eats off it's wing. It's also weird to think of birds flying at night. It creeps me out just to hear robins chirping outside my window at night during mating. Well; nice to get all your facts. TFS Trevor
