Cottontail
Sylvilagus nuttallii
Writing On Stone Provincial Park, S.E. Alberta, Canada
The Cottontail has to be the cutest wild rabbit I've ever seen. This one is the mom and she's keeping an eye on her babies that are running around the grass and bushes in front of her.
The Cottontail weights only 1.2 kg or 2.6 lbs. It has short hind feet and ears compared to hares. The fur is a grizzled brown which does not change colour in the winter.
Mating can occur in February and litters of 2 to 7 young are born about a month later. The young are helpless and blind and are born in underground burrows. The Cottontail can breed three or more times in a year.
You can find Cottontail in Alberta in coulees, river bottoms and in groupings of trees on the prairie where there is lots of food. In summer they consume green vegetation with grass being the food of choice. In winter they eat the buds, bark and branches of small shrubs and trees.

Hello Janice,
I like cottontail too, this Mom has woodticks on her ears by the look of her ear edges. Did you see many ticks on your trip? They sure can go when scared we have them all over our battery yard at work. Thanks for sharing this great image and your video, love your choice of music.
Rick
