Hello everyone, I have been at the Regional Park a lot the last days, when the weather would allow me to do so. It has been raining so much the past weeks. We even had a tornado in my area, Lanaudière, on Sunday. Here, we had a storm that lasted about an hour! Rain rain rain...

Anyway, yesterday I took a walk in the park at Ste-Béatrix and the water level of the Rivière l'Assomption was very high and the current strong. It was very tempting to photograph the water in a slow speed to get the movement and dynamic of it yet the softness of water... a classical.

This is what I am coming up with. I have also started to photograph the plants/trees with their leaves, flowers, stems, etc. to identify it and know more the botanical life of this beautiful forest I am living in. I wish to build a virtual herbal of the park with those pictures.

You can see, lower to the ground, a Royal Fern (Ormunda regalis L.), une Osmonde royale in French. There is a long stem wearing the sporangium. Ferns either have the spores underneath the leaves or grow a stem with the spores on it. This fern loves to grow on the shores of a water body, lakes, in damps soil. It is quite commun in Quebec and you can find it up to the 51 degrees of latitude.

The small tree covering it seems to be a Pimbina, or a Cranberry Viburnum (Viburnum opulus L. subsp. trilobum (Marsh.) R.T. Clauseri). In French, we call it Viorne trilobée or Pimbina and it is common in Québec. It could be a Squashberry Viburnum but I doubt so. The small red fruits grown on this tree attracts the birds and this is why I grow it on my yard.

So, here you see a picture of a river filled with the water of all the surrounding, after much rain. I am also very happy to be able to tell you about the plants growing on its shores as I see them every day even here in the village without knowing the identification.

I hope you enjoy this picture, I like it a lot. The water is so impressionist compared to the reality of the plants.

Thanks for reading!

Francine

I really love this photo, but I'm not sure what is drawing me to it...perhaps the rushing water, the symbol that life is rushing by as we go about our day, and then the plant that lives or dies depending on how high the water reaches. Plants must be hardy in order to survive and this one looks like a survivor to me.

I know very little about plants, so I look forward to learning more. My IQ went up a half a point when I read your notes.

In spite of the rushing water, I feel a sense of peace, pleasure, and anticipation with this capture. Thanks so much for posting it.

Hi Francine

The juxtaposition between the cool green ferns and blurred, rushing water works really well. Well seen and captured.

Hi Francine,
the contrast between static and movement here is very striking and appeals to me alot. Just the right shutter speed to get the effect you wanted here, and it's worked very well. I like your natural view of the world Francine :o)

Hello Francine,
This is a powerful capture - the force of nature against nature perhaps! Reminds me of a flood drenching everything in its way, but I hope that instead the beautiful Fern and the pretty tree thrive here! A lovely composition in fine natural colours and great detail.
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

Dear Francine,
It is like what we see here as flash flood. The velocity of water is quite scary :O Over all a grand image with excellent photographer's note. TFS.

Hi Nina,
The slow shutter has realized a nice motion effect here, where swollen river and plant life meet.
Great way to show/describe the fern & tree as subjects, thanks for the notes on em' :)

bonjour Francine

Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio
