Another shot from the archives, a Least Bittern (Ixobrychus exilis, 28-36 cm) that was about to catch its meal.

Environment Canada:
Least Bittern
Ixobrychus exilis

Threatened in Canada
Likely to be designated as threatened or vulnerable in Québec

Population status
The Least Bittern breeds locally from northern Argentina to southern Canada. Canada has roughly 1000 pairs, most of which breed in southern Ontario.

In Québec, this small wading bird has always been rare. The fewer than 200 pairs found in the province are limited to a few dozen marshes located mainly in the St. Lawrence Lowlands and Ottawa Valley.

Given its highly secretive ways, the Least Bittern is particularly difficult to detect and census. Therefore, it is difficult to reach a verdict on population trends in the species. Most specialists and observers consider it to be in decline throughout Canada. It has disappeared from such well-known protected sites as Long Point and Point Pelee in Ontario.

Conservation considerations and measures
The Least Bittern typically breeds in large marshes interspersed with pools and dominated by tall emergent vegetation such as cattails or Phragmites. Unfortunately, such habitats have always been threatened by development. In Québec, the draining and filling in of marshes for development are undoubtedly the main reasons for the species' scarcity.

To ensure the survival of the Least Bittern locally in Québec, better habitat protection is required. The species could benefit from the creation of artificial marshes such as those developed by Ducks Unlimited, as well as marshes designed to filter wastewater, as long as the water is of sufficient quality and disturbance is limited.

Hi mario. A unusual pose in this bird. You have captured good detail and natural looking colours. It blends in well with the BG.well done TFS.
Nick..

Hi Mario,

I assume these are as difficult to see or photograph as their large European cousins. Very good capture of one in action with great pose and composition, sharp details, good BG and colours.

Hello Mario,
This is a beautiful Bittern that you've captured in a lovely pose among the reeds. Excellent focus that makes it stand out even in this busy image. I really like the reflections of the bird and the reeds in the water too. Well done!
TFS and regards, Ulla

Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hello Mario,

Wonderful capture, ripples on the water looks like an abstract.Bittern in action with very good details. Well captured behavior shot. Just wonder how this bittern can evade its own center of gravity when 3/4th of the body is away from the perch and tilted in downward angle. Rear tip of the body also almost inline with the perch. What an adaptation in nature!!. Bittern must be having enormous grip to hold on to that perch. Looking at the perch dia I guess bird must be gripping only just more than half of the circumference of the perch, still wonderful acrobatic display in nature.
Thanks a lot for sharing this amazing shot.

Bonsoir Mario,

Pierre
