Hi Folks :-)

'chew chew chew , that's all I want to do ...' I am sure there must be a beaver song that goes much like that , every time that I get any where near one that is exactly why.

this one was very close indeed , I was on the bank just above but it was to busy chewing to notice me :-)

last night I decided it was high time that I stayed out to see what was up with the beavers , I have not done so in a while , spring run off had washed away all of their lodges and the river was running too fast for seeing much of them in the open water. now that the river has calmed I figured I would go see if any had taken up residence in the old spots...

beavers are of coarse known for their dam building activities that is not because all beavers do this cause they don't. it is because that is the most noticeable sign of beaver , and the most interesting way to portray the beaver. there is very little dam building activity along the Highwood river. but there are a lot of beavers. they build small lodges up against the banks of the river , I have also seen evidence of them taking residence in burrows as well , in the spring the water level will raise and they will all get to find new homes. this beaver lives a transient lifestyle , how she survives the winter I am unsure...

there are very many documentaries to be found about how the beaver will build a dam to raise the water level so that they can survive the winter , explaining their complex lodges with different compartments , most of these documentaries will have a content 60% or more about beaver dams and lodges , what all of these documentaries lack , is an honest portrayal of the highest percentage of beavers. most beavers never build a dam , most beaver do not live in a pond , and most beavers do not live in a large and complex lodge. this is a portrayal of the beaver that is considered interesting enough to sell dish soap during the commercials.

some beavers do , and they are responsible for some beautiful wetland , awe inspiring ponds , and down right amazing constructions , there is a very lovely beaver pond in the wood along my favorite pathways , the dam looks long abandoned , and the pond has no lodge....

thanks for stopping in
regards
Art
