On the 4th of July I went for a long walk with Toupti in the Regional Park at Ste-Béatrix. It is finally summer here and the sun is out and warm, beautifully shining on everyone.

We walked about 10 kilometers, through a trail leading in the forest, then on the edge between two small valleys, followed by two waterfalls... really, it is a rich environment and I enjoy it a lot.

In the forest, Toupti started to run and I was face to face with a porcupine peacefully eating leaves along the trail... it started running, showing us his back, but I didn't have time to take any picture. I was also afraid it would throw its needles at us but nothing such, it simply walked away from us.

A few steps further and Toupti, one more time, started running at a grouse! The grouse left in the woods, crackling and yelling, didn't stop the talking. I couldn't take a picture either because it was very dark and it would hide behind the tree trunks.

I have to tell you a secret: I sometimes feel afraid in the woods, I can sense the presence of animals, be it bears or coyotes or wolves. I wonder where they hide, if they are watching us (I'm sure they know our presence) or what would happen if I met one with my tiny little dog barking.

At the same time, when fear come up in my body, I feel a release and a joy from being there, from feeling that fear and being able to meet animals in the wild. I really envy those of you on TN meeting animals on a regular basis.

Back to this little beauty, wild but not a predator, simply a little pea, an Everlasting Pea, called Gesse à feuilles larges in French.

I tried to find information in my books or Internet but didn't find much. These plants are sometimes considered like weed as they are very pervasive. They are from the pea family and the peas are toxic but I couldn't find more information than that. I was also looking at any medicinal uses but found nothing except that this plant is common in Europe and has been introduced in North America and now grows almost everywhere.

Strangely enough, it's the first time that I notice this beautiful little flower. I laid on my stomach and took some pictures of it, at the end of the walk, being very wrecked and happy.

I hope it will bring you joy in your heart. Maybe that is their medicinal use, bringing joy to whoever looks at it.

Today I will be busy with visitors coming to swim at the lake. I will try and write comments on your posts this evening. It is sunny, beautiful and I am anxious to go out.

Hello and bye bye!

Francine

Hello Francine, this is a great looking image, it just "sits" right, just a very good composition. Lovely natural colours, excellent details.. gone to my favourite list...regards h

Your stories equal or better mine!! I love reading of your experiences in the woods whilst taking images.Les couleurs comme ceci est mon préféré ! Vous avez maintenant besoin d'un camera video ! ...and old hippies used to take a blanket and toss them over the porcupine, then let it get away and use some of the needles for making beaded earrings and other jewelry! I believe some of the Plains Indians did this as well!

Hello Francine,

I enjoyed your notes enormously and I never knew before that porcupines throw their needles!

This is a very sharp shot of this diminutive flower, showing the details of its veined petals and its colours.
Perfectly composed.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Francine,

Loved your story. I'm sure I would share your feelings however there are no woods here. Your Everlasting Pea is beautiful - another flower I have not seen. I love the colors, the shapes, and the shades of pink. Very pretty against the green background.

Jane

Hi Francine,
this is a gorgeous image!
The delicate colours and soft lighting is wonderful!
Great DOF.
Superb composition.

Well done!

Joe

Ah, my friend, you were safe. Your little dog or you would have to actually touch the porcupine to get quilled. (I learned that through friends here.)

This is a little beauty though. I love the composition, the excellent DOF, and the lovely contrast of pastel against the BG.

Your notes are also pleasing. :)

I wish we still had the same wildlife in the UK Francine, there's nothing dangerous lurking in our woods anymore, excpet for people of course.
This is a lovely, summery shot. You can really see the sun has returned and the colours are beautiful. Nice framing and a good DOF tooo, well done!

Salut Francine!

Markus

Sorry! My computer is acting up on me again, this time I think it's got some virus!
Great shot!

Hi Francine,
this is a lovely and airy looking capture showing well the wild pea flowers which also are common here where I live.I like the tiny pea pods they produce however I have never tried to eat them as when in doubt, don't.The details and colours are all very nice for this capture with just a little softness in the focus and the light and airy look is relaxing as well.I like simple photos that speak softly and this is just such a photo. Thanks for sharing a reminder of warmer days. Bob
