I got this shot of a Purple Martin yesterday in one of our local park woodlands. It's the first I've seen one. They must hate the local city and prefer the outskirts of it. It's one of our brightest birds next to the male goldfinch's here. I thought I'd post it because of it's brightness.

Habitat is open woodlands, residential areas and aggricultural land.
In the past Southern Indian tribes would hang clusters of hollow gourdes in trees near
their gardens for them to use as nests. I assume it's because they're said to be a beneficial
bird for the garden somehow. Possible in getting rid of bugs. |
