[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hi Folks , one insect that I saw a few times in the badlands , was the ambush bug , at first I only suspected it as such till I came on this scene. at first I had approached from the other side where only the moth was visible , I have grown so used to having moth and butterfly insects fly away at my approach that as I got closer I began to wonder what was up? I took one exposure from the other side , and at the moths lack of movement and some how unnatural seeming position , I wondered if it was attacked by a goldenrod spider , looking on the other side I found this ambush bug feeding.

having poor lighting and a not great angle of this scene , when I later viewed the images I was a little disappointed , most of them did not turn out , and the rest where really not very good this is about the best I managed and it required a fair amount of lighting adjustment. sometimes I pay the price for not having a proper macro flash. I think that if I had been better prepared to set my flash on to the little tripod I bought for it and used it in comander mode that this set of photos would have been less disapointing. I have before encountered such darkness using the flash in TTL mode and perhaps I should have moved it to a manual setting for some of these shots as well.

none the less I am happy to have photographed it and chalk it up to a learning experience. though I do a large amount of bug hunting I do not often find such a drama , so it was a treat either way.

honestly I must admit to being a bit of a softy though , when I saw this moths plight I felt a bit sad for it , but I guess that is the way of things in the natural world...

thanks for stopping in , I hope that you like it
regards

hi art,
i appreciate your good efforts and the notes are worth reading. the viewpoint is fine here, its the exposure that went wrong here. i always use manual exposures for my images, choosing my main subjects reading. depth is important but it should be just suffient for the image. with tripod even in these lighing conditions you can get decent image even with out using flash. i know you are good in using flash which i am not. all my images that you have seen are shot with available light. i only wish that you stick to rectangle format, its your choice though. did a workshop, hope you don't ming. tfs.

Hi Art!

Great moment and interesting story in your note. For first look I didn't realise what is going on on your picture :-) This small bug is really tough! I see such scene for first time in my life.

Interesting that the flash fired but gave you diffuse. I think it worked out for the better Art. It gives much clearer details..Not sure if there is much I could do for it..maybe I'll give it a try but it is a very complex photo..and is pretty much best as seen.
