Painted Lady (Vanessa Cardui)

Upperside is orange-brown with darker wing bases; forewing with black apex patch and white bar on leading edge; hindwing submarginal row of 5 small black spots sometimes has blue scales. Underside has a black, brown, and gray pattern with 4 small submarginal eyespots.

The Painted Lady prefers nectar from composites 3-6 feet high, especially thistles; also aster, cosmos, blazing star, ironweed, and joe-pye weed. Flowers from other families that are visited include red clover, buttonbush, privet, and milkweeds.

Hello Lise,
I saw this "Lady" too recently, in Oregon, but I didn't get a picture as good as yours. Sometimes they pose and sometimes they don't, I guess. Yous shot has excellent colours, composition and detail. Well done and thanks.

This is an outstanding shot of this beautiful Painted Lay. Lovely colours, details and markings on its upper wings and I like the natural surrounding and you chosen top POV to portray it. Excellent diagonal composition. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Lise,

You did a very nice photo of Painet Lady. Image is very good as you addapted well the DOF to the subject and the butterfly can be seen in great detail. Light is very well used as colors are rendered naturaly. I like composition too with the butterfly positioned diagonaly.
