Hi Folks , this is an image of a may fly larva , that I found in kananaskis country yesterday , the water in this area of the sheep river is so clean , I wish that I could get to spend more time there :-) I saw a bunch of these in a pool and was not really sure what they where , but it did not take long to find out.

the mayfly larvae are good indicators of a waters cleanliness , they are considered very pollution sensitive so are found in good water. they spend most of their life in water , from months to years , the structures along its side are gills , there are seven pairs , and it is a distinctive mayfly trait., they molt a number of times , and are one of few insects that have a final molting after they have wings. their adult life is very short , for this reason some languages name them the 'one day fly'

thanks for stopping in
regards
Art

Hello Art,
may fly larvae are rarely presented. Your picture shows the larva very clear and sharp.
Fortunately, the water is super clean and obviously does not flow very strong.
Thank you for posting this interesting picture.
Best wishs, Peter Roos

Hi Art,
Neighbors today. A nice capture of this mayfly larva. Very well composed but I think sharpness is missing I think due to heavy cropping. Anyways still then a nice subject. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Art, Hmm. a very interesting shot. I am not sure how you spotted this. You have an excellent nature eye. Superb sharpness and I somehow agree with HP on the cropping. Tks for sharing.
