[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
this is a Dronefly taken near quebec city.

The drone fly or rattailed maggot resembles the honey bee in action and appearance but has only one pair of wings. Its body is brownish to black, fairly hairy and about 15 mm long. The thorax has a yellowish tint and a vertical stripe

These flies occur throughout much of the world. The drone fly was introduced into North America sometime prior to 1874. Both flies are now common from Alaska to Labrador and south into California and Florida.

These flies are attracted by colorful flowers (especially yellow) as well as by odors of decay. They do not suck blood. Rattailed maggots feed on decaying organic matter in stagnant water or moist excrement.

Hi Angela,
it has been a while since I last dropped in on your photos and I must say since you have got a 40D your photos really do sing and this one is no exception. This dronefly is attracted to a fairly common golden rod flower and it is one I have not seen before now (dronefly that is).You have very natural colour and a good point of view working well for this shot and if there is a critique I can offer it would be that some of this flower is out of focus but that is just a wee nit. Thanks for giving us this view and I sincerely hope that you will continue to go out and photo that which makes life here on Earth so very wonderful. Bob

Hello Angela,
A fine capture of an American species of Drone Fly nicely composed among the Golden Rod flowers with good sharpness of the main subject.
Thanks for sharing this fine image,
Ivan

Hi Angela!

Lovely shot of the fly! I never heard of this species, although I checked out it lives in Hungary too. You composed very well and achieved a wide enough dof to fit him in. TFS!

Best regards,
Andor

Hi Angela.
I like your very pictorial and well done picture so much. Pictured scene, vibrant colours, great DOF and details/sharpness of the insect and flowers are great. All is perfect. Bravo.
