Common Snapping Turtle ~ Chelydra serpentina
Description:
20 - 40 cm, largest turtle in Ontario
carapace is dark brown to black, plastron is yellow to tan
long tail with a row of large scales
massive head with powerful, hooked jaw
Habitat lakes and permanent ponds, preferably with a muddy bottom

Up close and personal. I didn't realize that snappers spent any time on the shore in the open. While fishing, I once picked up a baby turtle, perhaps an inch across. Stuck my little finger in his face and he managed to chomp my finger tip.

Ah Ziggy, why do I always feel sorry for these beautiful creatures? I thought they only lived by the sea. Do they have homes to go to, or just swim around and land anywhere? Good shot of him, thank you.
