"A hard Light" is what I call today's upload.Ever since I first saw a Ruddy Duck I have been trying to get photos of them and on the day of this shot I had my best opportunity to date. The sky was overcast at the time and this fellow was so near to me that despite the poor light I thought I would give it a go and for that I was rewarded with this shot and several others.I seldom ever use a tripod as it hinders my movement tracking animals and for this shot I wish I had used my tripod or had a faster lens say an f/2.8.
Ruddy ducks are small ducks that are very tough to get near too as they are quite shy and move off quickly when they see you.I was surprised this little guy stayed near to me, long enough to get for the conditions decent photos of him. This duck species is the only one here in Canada that has a sky-blue coloured bill which along with his rusty red plumage are outstanding features he has.I also like the way they drum on their breasts and bob their heads to impress the females of the species while they have the high tail fanned out and up as they do.They are great little ducks and I like them very much and hope with good light for another chance to photo them.I hope you like my ruddy buddy in a hard light.PP was done using Paint.Net.

Hi Bob. Despite the overcase conditions, I am delighted that you ventured out to give the shot of this beautiful duck a try and was rewarded well enough to share with us.

I find this an adorable little one ... so cuddly and sweet. The shyness must have vanished perhaps because it felt you genuinely yearned to get a good shot of its beauty. The colours and features on the wtaer bird so magnificent..with blue bill, the rusty plumage and most of all the upturned tail.
TFS for this beauty
Cheers

Hello Bob

A lovely close up of this Ruddy duck, the reflection is quite nice too.
The colours look natural and the natural setting makes for a super capture.
I love the big drop of water on it's back.
