[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note [French]
From the archives, a Merlin (Falco columbarius, 25 to 32 cm) shot in a marsh of Ile Bizard.

A small falcon of northern forests and prairies, the Merlin is the least well-marked of the American falcons. It is becoming a regular breeder in urban areas.
Description
Small hawk. Long, pointed wings. Long, banded tail. Faint mustache mark. Brown streaking on chest and belly. Back unmarked gray or brown.
Size: 24-30 cm (9-12 in)
Wingspan: 53-68 cm (21-27 in)
Weight: 160-240 g (5.65-8.47 ounces)
Sex Differences
Sexes similar, but male smaller and gray on back, female brown.
Sound
Call a high "kee, kee, kee."
Conservation Status
Expanding breeding range and may be increasing in numbers.
Other Names
Faucon émerillon (French)
Esmerejón (Spanish)
Pigeon Hawk (English)
Cool Facts
The Merlin does not build a nest, but instead takes over old nests of other raptors or crows. It sometimes nests on top of domed magpie nests rather than in the nest cavity.

Hello Mario,
Another great shot from your archives. I like the pose with the head turned, the POV, composition and sharpness in this portrait of a Merlin, but I wondered if I could reduce the shady areas a little so I tried it in the WS.
I hope you don't mind, especially as you photography is of such a high standard!

Hi Mario,

I love the pose of this Merlin on his high perch looking over his shoulder. A bit dark but the colors and fine details come through. The eye is magnificent. Beautiful blue sky for a background and a great vertical composition.

Wow that is a while back. I can tell how much you have grown in imagery since that time...not saying though that it is any the worse,,,just learning along with all of us...At one time in my life I was considered a professional. Today I have to strive hard to keep up with technology and youth...You are a fast learner.

Hi Mario,
this is a good photo of the Merlin taken in very strong looking light and side lit at that. The details are hard to bring out in just such a light but you have done well with this capture.I like the typical Merlin pose and have seen that pose of the over the shoulder gaze many, many times.Merlins are vicious little birds and for their size pretty fearless and very fast flying, woe for any bird smaller than them that gets in the way. Ciao Mario,
TFS.
