[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a hoary marmot (marmota caligata), commonly called the whistling marmot because of the loud and sometimes alarming whistles they can omit at passersby. They are members of the squirrel family but are about 10 times the size of a gray squirrel, weighing up to 13Kg - about the same size as a groundhog (woodchuck). They live high in the North American mountains, usually in rocky, snowy places as here. They spend 7 months hibernating in the winter.
I came across this one recently when hiking up the Little Whistler Peak above the town of Whistler in BC, Canada. And of course, the famous ski town of Whistler gets its name from these critters. This guy was busy digging out a burrow (I'll submit that picture later), but paused for a breather to admire the view and catch its breath.
Image cropped a little, levels, a little burning to lighten up its eye, and a bit of dodging to darken the background a little.

Interesting note, and an interesting photo set against amazing scenery. Well worth a big smiley.

Hello John

Welcome to TN. Great shot. Looks like the weather was setting in. I love the landscape. Cute critter, well dressed for the weather. Nice one. Thanks.

Hi John, welcome to TN. This hoary marmot is new to me. (I first thought it was a seal!) Good notes too thank you. Excellent shot with super scenery and good exposure too. Well done, and I look forward to seeing the burrow some time.

imprésionnant toute la neige qu'il reste pour un 26 juin. Tu était à quelle altitude ?

Nice! I have heard them .. climbed through a coloney, burrows every where, in Hatcher's Pass N of Anchorage Ak ... never saw one .. they kept running between their tunnels.

I am impressed.
