queen anne's lace

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
| Queen Anne's Lace (daucus carota) is a mark of high summer in Ontario. This one seemed to be exploding like a firework! There is an orange beetle with black wing tips which is particularly attracted to it this time of the year. It is the forerunner of the carrot (daucus sativa). Like the carrot, it's roots are edible, but care must be taken NOT to confuse this plant with poison hemlock and water hemlock. The flowers are creamy white, in flat-topped umbels with feathery green collars. Leaves are fernlike; stems hairy; fruits spiny, in dried seedheads like birds' nests. Habitat: fields, meadows, roadsides. Mixed cloud and sun, early afternoon. |
