Western Rattlesnake
(Crotalus viridis)

In Canada the Western Rattlesnake are only found in southern British Columbia and southeastern Alberta. I captured this Rattlesnake swimming across the Red Deer River during our annual canoe trip. The Western Rattlesnake is a species at risk because of needless killings by humans.

Adults can grow to 60 to 150 cm in total length and can be brown, tan, grey or olive with large dark brown blotches on the back and sides.

During our canoe trip we also came across Garter Snakes and Bull Snakes, neither are poisonous.

Hi Janice,

Great capture! Very well focused image. Good colours. I have rarely encountered snakes in the wild. I've never seen a rattlesnake, except in zoos. I've always supposed that rattlesnakes were land creatures. Yet, many snakes swim, so why not rattlesnakes? Your sighting would have so startled me that I doubt whether I could have held the camera steady. TFS.

Regards,
John

Hello Janice,
What else is there to say but a great catch of a seldom seen occurance even though rattlers are known to swim more often than one is to be made to believe.
Congrat's,
Steve

OUCH! I know from many of Ricks images about your Province...and I also know I have an image of Ron holding one...appearing sort of proud but to capture it in the water is an entirely different thing...It appears menacing...reminds me of when the movie Jaws came out...after seeing it...may times folks thought twice about where they swam! Spot on eye! Kudos!

Hello janice !
Wow, what an unusual picture ! I have never seen a wild snake, and even less swimming in the water ! And you have really captured him with great skill. I love the soft and tender colors, the composition with wide space around the snake and of course the moment you have captured is great. Very well done !
Valérie.

Hi Janice,
You choose the Red Deer River this year, which section did you do? Excellent image of this nice looking specimen crossing the little muddy. Nice weather we're having my legs are getting a work out at work with all the mud.
Rick

Hello Janice Smith,

A nice observation.
I am surprised to see that rattle snakes are such good swimmers and even can cross a river like this one.
