The Badlands
Beautiful, yet unforgiving.

Huge rivers that flowed here 75 million years ago left behind sand and mud which helped to create the Badlands we know today. Thirteen thousand years ago the glaciers were retreating and the melting snow and ice carved the valleys and coulees we see today. Erosion is still going on from the spring runoff, rain and wind.

The Red Deer River which flows through the area allows vegetation to flourish along it's banks which in turn draws many birds, insects and mammals. It's not uncommon to see Great Blue Heron, Pelicans, Ducks, Geese and many different species of songbirds.

My temperature gauge on my GPS showed 99 degrees F this day.

Hello Janice,
A great view back into time when this area was covered by water and nature's aftermath of weather change. The mounts are always a welcoming sight in a landscape, and yours is an excellent view into the Badlands abd what one could expect to find.
Great Job,
Steve

Hi Janice,

Your photo makes me want to travel to the Badlands. I doubt that I could improve upon the quality of your image, however. It would be great to be able to take pictures of some of the inhabitants of the area also. The colours and details that you present in your landscape are terrific. I could not imagine actually viewing the Badlands with any more clarity than you have provided in your photo. TFS.

Regards,
John

Hello Janice,
A great perspective of these buttes.
Excellent clarity and details on the textures on the slopes.
Interesting geological formations (thanks for the notes).
The light is very good, despite the heat.
TFS. ; )

Nice work Janice,
I like the few clouds there, they add to this theme of "unforgiving" terrain..
Looks most inhospitable..
Well done & take care,
Howard
