Hi Folk's , today I have this close in macro of a damselfly , I think that this is a common spreadwing female. I know that the wings hardly look to be spread out in the fashion of a spread wing , but I seen several of these damsels yesterday and it seemed that some did rest with wings more spread out and some with them less so. none the less any corrections to my ID are of coarse welcome :-)

yesterday was my first outing that I had only the option for using my D-80 , I felt that it was time to send my D-300 in for cleaning so did that , so will be using my older camera for a bit , but that is ok , the D-80 is a fine camera...

pp- color adjustment in raw conversion , auto contrast slight added saturation & unsharp mask in photoshop elements , saved as tiff and resized in Nikons Capture NX , with slight sharpen to compensate for interpolation.

image shot at 1:1 reproduction ratio

Hi Art. You have taken a fine close up of this Spreadwing . We can see fine detail in the large eyes and wings. Your Use of the light has given bright colours and a shine to the wings. I like the side POV against the plain Green BG. well done TFs.

Hi Art,

Nice shot of that damselfly! It looks as though your shots aren't suffering at all with your D80 backup camera!

I tried to help you out with info on the spreadwings. But, I don't know if I'm any farther ahead than I was. If your photo shows a Common Spreadwing, it has the Latin name of Lestes disjunctus. That places the damselfly in the subfamily Lestinae. Those spreadwings generally hold their wings at an angle away from their bodies. Although, I have seen cases, and have read about cases where Lestinae (or "true" Spreadwings) sometimes fold their wings along their bodies. Even in the other subfamily of spreadwings, Sympecmatinae, they don't necessarily always fold their wings along their bodies -- but, they tend to do that.

By the way, I understand that the Common Spreadwing is now referred to as the Northern Spreadwing. Also, by the way, it's possible that your photo is showing another Lestes species -- Lestes dryas or Emerald Spreadwing -- I can't be sure, because I would need more light on the upper surface of the damselfly to ID it properly.

TFS,
John
