| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This beautiful and threatened species was found on the bruce peninsula. At this time of the year rattlesnakes search for hibernation sites for the winter. This snake is probably about two years old. Adults are not large, ranging from 45 to 75 cm (18 to 30 inches) in length.
In Ontario, this species is found only near the eastern shore of Georgian Bay, the Bruce Peninsula, Wainfleet Bog and Ojibway Prairie. However, recently they have been spotted far North of Georgian Bay and in fact, all over the Great Lakes. It is becoming rare in Canada due to persecution and loss of habitat and is designated as Threatened by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), as well as the Committee on the Status of Species-at-Risk in Ontario (COSSARO).
From wikipedia also see www.massassauga.ca the canadian national recovery team for this species. |
