Mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus)

Order : Artiodactyla

Family : Bovidae

Diet : Herbivorous , feeding on grasses, forbs, shoots berries and twigs.

Reproduction : Females are sexually mature at 2 years and males at 3-years. Mating occurs between late November and early January. The single kid is born between late May and mid-June, after a gestation period of 6 months, and is weaned after 6 weeks.

Longevity : Up 18 years in the wild, more in captivity.

Predators : Pumas, grizzly bears, gray wolves, coyotes and wolverines; young may also be taken by golden eagles.

Status : Abundant, not at risk.

I took some shots of this mountain goat against the sun to create this cool shinning effect.

This picture was taken at the Zoo of St-Félicien in the superb region of Lac St-Jean in Quebec to get some shots of North American species living in their natural habits. The Zoo is open during the winter and you will get to see in the next days my pictures of the following animals : polar bear, red fox, river otter, wolverine, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, Canada lynx, cougar, coyote, snowy owl and bald eagle.

All pictures taken in the snow on a beautiful clear and sunny sky, but cold day (-15°C or 5°F).

So just stay tune, and enjoy !!!

What a magnificent specimen of a mountain goat you have captured there, Stephen. I like the backlit effect, though I wish the front of the goat were a bit brighter. I wonder if a tad more space to the right would make the composition look less centered. Great shot. Well done and TFS. : )

Poor goat, he looks freezing! Great capture, I love the sun shining through the wool.

Hello Estephan: This image captures the attention immediately, not alone for the contrast, the sympathy captured in the goat is an attractiveness in the image, I cannot stop to see its face and that smile that it seems to shine in her as well as the sun shines in its skin. I like the contrast, I enjoy to see texture captured in the snow, single treatment of imagining the cold, I like the captured white color, as well as the contrasts with the skin of the paws of the goat. Cordial greetings. *Ninfa Urania*

Hi Stephan

What a woolly fellow. The coat certainly fits the day! Lovely face. Well done on the exposure. Nice work. Thanks.

Hi Stephan,
This is excellent! I love the back lighting that is creating that halo effect around him. Great job on this very difficut exposure. The colors and detail in this are superb. Composition and raming are flawless.
Really great stuff!
Scott

Great capture of this wonderful goat, Stephan.

This is not an easy shot to get right, however, you have done an excellent job of it.

Details, lighting, POV, colors, and BG are superb.

Well done and thank you.

This is nice. I like the colours, details and the light that is shining through the wool. Well done.

Wooooow ! What a wonderful and interesting photo that you have well done ! Nice light in the back. I also appreciate the complementary note... Congratulations Stephan and thanks for sharing.

What a fabulous zoo. I am so jealous! It's a great shot. Since you got such good backlighting I would be tempted to emphasize it a little more. I would like just enough of a contrast boost to make the eyes and nose black. I think in wildlife photography "The eyes have it" In some forms of Japanese sumi-e painting they start with the eye!...and then build the animal around it. I did a quick workshop just to see what the effect would be. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice angle of shot and a good set of cool colours.

Lovely shot!
The backlight gives amazing effect. Picture has very good POV and composition, nice details too.
I like it.
VERY WELL DONE!

À part la tête, il me rappelle me Berger Anglais avec ses grosse pattes.

Très belle lumière qui met en évidence l'epaisseur de sa fourrure. L'exposition est très bien contrôlée.
Excellent travail Stephan.

Hello Stephan,
Fantastic POV, I lobe the light and the exposition. Winter just comes out of the picture :-)
Best greetings,
Michal

Stephan,
An excellent, well exposed for backlighting image. Very clean.
Quite a look of interest in who you are and what you are doing by this goat.
Nice shot...
