Red fox (Vulpes vulpes)

Order : Carnivora

Family : Canidae

Diet : Carnivorous , feeding principally on small mammals, carrion, birds, frogs, insects, but also eats berries.

Reproduction : Sexually mature at 10 months. Mating occurs between December and March. The 4-7 cubs are born between March and May after a gestation period of 2 months, and are weaned after 4-5 weeks.

Longevity : Up to 10 years in the wild and 14 years in captivity.

Predators : Canadian lynx, bobcats, coyotes, wolverines, gray wolves and black bears.

Status : Abundant, not at risk.

The picture of this red fox was taken at the Zoo of St-Félicien in the superb region of Lac St-Jean in Quebec to get some shots of North American species living in their natural habits. The Zoo is open during the winter and you will get to see in the next days my pictures of the following animals : polar bear, red fox, river otter, wolverine, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, Canada lynx, cougar, coyote, snowy owl and bald eagle.

All pictures taken in the snow on a beautiful clear and sunny sky, but cold day (-15°C or 5°F).

So just stay tune, and enjoy !!!

Hi Stephan

Very nice shot. Well composed. Good light and colours. Clear, sharp, showing good detail. Nice work. Thanks.

Hello Stephan, I love this picture! I´m a fan of red foxes. This is a very nice capture. Excellent colours and very good sharp details. Composition and POV/DoF are great also. Very well done. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Stepan,
it's a lovely shot of the red fox.
Well composed, nice colours and good POV.
Pity you use 400 ISO, you lost a lot of small details specially in the fur.
Very well done.

Love this with in on the snow. Looks good. Maybe better from a different angle. Still a good shot a of nice fox.

This zoo seems a great place for seeing and capturing wild animals, several people have posted images from there.
TFS your excelent image the detail in the well fluffed up fur is very well seen.

A very nice shot. I feel it is a little under saturated. I used Photoshop Elements "Levels" set to RGB 30 0.89 236. I think it really makes your picture come alive. The eyes become intense, the snow sparkles, and the fur looks rich with much small detail restored.

Salut Stephan!

Belle photo de renard! L'image est bien nette et bien exposée avec une très belle texture dans la neige. J'aime bien aussi la neutralité des couleurs surtout dans la neige qui souvent l'hiver tend à trop bleuir.
Excellent travail et merci de le partager.

Hi Stephan,
An excellent shot on this Red Fox. Exposure looks perfect in this nice soft light. Beautiful colors in that winter coat on the fox. Detail and clarity are superb. Nice work!
