Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus)

Order : Carnivora

Family : Ursidae

Diet : Carnivorous, feeding on seals (principally ringed seals), fish, small mammals, birds, marine invertebrates, eggs and carrion. It also eats berries and seaweed.

Reproduction : Females are sexually mature at 4 to 5 years and males at 5 to 6 years. Mating occurs between late February and early June. The 2 cubs are born between late November and January after a delayed implantation (5-7 months) followed by an active gestation period of 2 months, and are weaned after about 1½ years.

Longevity : Up to 20 years in the wild and 40 years in captivity.

Predators : No natural predator, except occasionally taken by killer whales.

Status : Protected, but remains of concern because of the deterioration of its habitat due to global warming.

In weather closer from their natural habits, polar bears are VERY active (at least more than in some HOT zoos during the summer). This guy (or girl, because there is 2 males and one female there) was moving all the time itching himself with the snowy ground. The other was swimming back in forth in the windowed pool practicing himself, while the other one was watching the action.

The picture was taken at the Zoo of St-Félicien in the superb region of Lac St-Jean in Quebec to get some shots of North American species living in their natural habits. The Zoo is open during the winter and you will get to see in the next days my pictures of the following animals : polar bear, red fox, river otter, wolverine, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, Canada lynx, cougar, coyote, snowy owl and bald eagle.

All pictures taken in the snow on a beautiful clear and sunny sky, but cold day (-15°C or 5°F).

So just stay tune, and enjoy !!!

Salut Stéphan!
L'hiver je veille tard...
Je ne suis jamais allé au Zoo de St-Félicien. Un jour, peut-être...

Amusant, cet ours polaire. Excellente composition.
J'ai bien hâte de voir tes prochaines photos. Il ne faisait pas chaud!
Merci.

Hi Stephan,
What a cute pose of this polar bear. Another great addition to your arctic animals series. I teach a unit on arctic animals to my 8 year-old students, and they love your pictures. TFS. : )

Hi Stephan,
