[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Orca (Orcinus orca), also known as the Killer Whale, is the largest member of the oceanic dolphin family. It is the second-most widely distributed mammal on Earth (after humans) and is found in all the world's oceans. It is also a versatile predator, eating fish, turtles, birds, seals, sharks and even other juvenile and small cetaceans. This puts the Orca at the pinnacle of the marine food chain. The orca also attacks whales, in particular Gray Whales.

A former name for the species is Grampus. This is now seldom used and should not be confused with the Grampus genus (containing Risso's Dolphin).

The name "Orca" (plural "Orcas") was originally given to these animals by the ancient Romans, possibly borrowed from the Greek word ὄρυξ which (among other things) referred to a species of whale.

The name "killer whale" is widely used in common English. However since the 1960s "orca" has steadily grown in popularity as the common name to identify the species and is now more popular than the traditional name amongst those in the field.

There are several reasons for the change. First, having the word whale in the name of a species that is really a dolphin causes confusion. Second, the species is called orca in most other European languages and, as there has been a steady increase in the amount of international research on the species, there has been a convergence in naming.

Furthermore, the killer in "killer whale" is often wrongly assumed to imply that the creature is a killer of humans, an attitude amplified by an unfortunate movie seeking to capitalize from the buzz from Jaws (1975). Orca: The Killer Whale (1977) starred Richard Harris and Bo Derek. It is thought this long standing and often fearful reputation can be put to rest by using the more neutral name of orca.

A pod of Orcas is capable of taking down a large whale. It is commonly thought that 18th-century Spanish sailors dubbed these creatures asesina-ballenas, or "whale killer" for this reason. However, this title was improperly translated into English as "killer whale". The term became so prevalent that Spanish speakers commonly used its retranslation of ballena asesina.

Oh my gosh, Pieter. I would have given my eyeteeth to witness (not to mention photograph) this scene. I have been up to British Columbia and the Seattle area many times and have hoped to see some Orcas, but have not yet been accorded the privilege. What a thrill! Thank you for sharing this fantastic scene. which BTW, is excellently executed. : )

Excellent shot on this pair of Orca's. Amaingly clear and detailed. I love the color and texture of the water. I know they are related to dolphins, but having been very close with one of these at Sea World, You can see why they get the whale tag...They are very large!

Hi Pieter, a lovely mother'n'child capture. It is beautiful, nice and sharp and the colours of the water are so real. Personally, I would like to see more space at the back where we know the mother's tail must be in the water.
I especially like the reflections of the fins in the water.

Good photo and one of the most interesting and useful notes I've ever read. I always thought they were a whale, not a dolphin. I don't remember Bo Derek in the film, although I do remember Charlotte rampling. Anyway, to the photo...

I assume there wasn't any more detail on the left of the frame or you would have included it, I would have liked to have seen more, and perhaps the orcas lower in the frame, more towards the bottom left corner. Others may disagree.
I think it's a little over-sharpened as well, there is a halo around the fins and to be honest, there is little in the photo that would benefit from sharpening anyway, both the water and the orca's are smooth.

Hi Pieter, what a great shot of Orcas. It is so clear, vibrant and sharp. The swell of the sea looks like some very expensive silken fabric. Great use of DOF and composition. Very nicely done. How did you come to be so close to them? I read you were on a small boat, was it hired specifically to see them?
