Although this handsome prairie dog is well-known in North America, thus not a surprise for some of you, I wanted to post this pic for two reasons. First as a souvenir of a beautiful month of full nature close to Banff (Alberta) in 1995, and second, as an illustration of wild life great differences from region to region. In this case, it's evident. These are totally unknown in France, and I guess in Europe, except in zoos! Don't know about other places. In France, we only have their "cousins" like marmots and squirrels, but in no way they are as familiar as this one. Rabies has created high mortality amongst squirrels until the seventies. Its eradicated now, and squirrels are slowly coming back.
I was surprised to see how it was easy to approach this chap, that we found, he and his like, on the road to Lake O'Hara (another magnificent place in Alberta).

The prairie dog is a rodent that is a member of the squirrel family (sciuridae). There are five species of prairie dogs (named like that because of their bark-like warning signal), but the two main ones are the black-tailed and the white tailed. Although the tail is not visible here, I guess it's a black-tailed one, because they are the most common ones and there is no black patch above the eye as with the white-tailed. Black-tailed prairie dogs are diurnal, burrowing animals, they do not hibernate as do white-tailed, except during very cold winters.
All of them are very social, live in colonies and are protected because very sensible to human activities.

It's really nice photo.
I like the light and shadows. And the face of the animal is so calm. It looks as if it didn't pay any attention to you.

Oh! Oui! Jean-Michel. Très bien. Je crois n'avoir jamais vu cette bête auparavant.
Un transfert numérique accompli avec grand soin, semble-t-il.
On voit bien qu'il est de la même famille que la marmotte. Son pelage est plus coloré.
Un bon travail: image et note instructive, comme je les aime.
