| This is Garlic Mustard (Alliaria Petiolata). There was an article about it in today's Toronto Sun. It has a single stalk and small white flowers. It is a weed which can do a great deal of damage to native plants. It's roots produce a FUNGICIDE which will kill the fungus that feeds neighbouring plants, even years after it has been eradicated from the area. Pull it up before it blooms or while it is flowering, not when it has gone to seed. Trilliums and even maple trees and many other species are at risk from this plant which seems to be spreading into forests and areas where it hasn't been before. Particularly prevalent in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. I had some growing under my lilacs and had just left it there because when small it makes a pretty ground cover. Yank it out, it's neighbours will thank you! |
