Cedar Waxwing
Bombycilla cedrorum
Jaseur d'Amérique

I took this picture in a cemetery where these birds can find all the wild berries they need during winter. That day was very cold (-20C or -4 Farenheit). They "drink" snow once in a while after having cherries or wild apples.

Following note is from BirdNature.com:
The Cedar Waxwing is a brown bird with a crest and a black mask. The tail feather has a yellow band, waxy red tips on secondary wing feathers, gray rump, yellow belly. The female is similar to the male except smaller. This bird is 6 1/2-7" in length with a wingspread of 11-12".

This bird is without any song, even during the breeding season, having only a note which it uses for the purpose of calling others of its kind. The birds move in close bodies, sometimes amounting to large flocks, making various loops before landing. They are also excellent insect catchers and spending most of their time in pursuit of winged insects.

Song:
The song of the Cedar Waxwing is seldom heard. When heard, it's a quiet trilling.

Range:
Wide band across Canada and US border extending to central US

I adore these birds and your image is very endearing. Love how the one on the left is fooling or drinking the snow. A bit strong on the back lighting, bit otherwise a very pleasing image. I have lens envy, though...want the 500mm f/4 really bad!

Great capture for what looks like very dull conditions, I particularly like the action taking place on the left ;-))
The photo looks as if it consists of two "layers", one with the main actors and one with the "backing group" ;-)
-20C sounds way below my freezing point, I'm glad we're staying around 0C at present although that means we're not likely to get a white christmas.

Interesting image, I like the narrow DOF, and the sharpness and smoothness of the band in focus. I also like the little bit of movement that the flying snow has introduced.

Merci René d'avoir pris cette photo avant la pluie et le redoux d'aujourd'hui.
Une très bonne photo des ces jaseurs des cèdres en train de se rassasier.
Bon angle de prise de vue et une excellente profondeur de champ.
Belle capture!
Cimetière Côte-des-Neiges?

Very nice Rene.
Good colours and very good details.
Your waxwings are more colourful than ours.
Very good work.

This is beautiful and I love the moment with them drinking the snow. The sharpness is great and the composition excellent.

Very well done and thanks for posting.

I laughed when I saw the waxwing on the left! What a great natural shot. Capturing them with their mouths full of snow, clearly relaxed and not knowing you were around--well done! Birds always seem to be posing, even when they're not, so this is a wonderful shot!
