Habitat is usually dense coniferous forests. The bird hunts open fens, meadows, bogs and muskegs.Usually roosts in trees, near the trunk to avoid detection.Unlike many other owls this one will hunt during daylight hours, particularly on overcast days. Its easiest observed during winter months, when the foliage is out of the trees.

pros: great subject and moment
cons: sharpness, colours
Look at my workshop, Blair.
Amazing you could get such a shot. I have rarely seen an owl and I'm sure they aren't easy to sneak up on with those big eyes. Great job, he is very well hidden.
One of my favourite species, a wonder just to see it in the wild, never mind photograph it. Your shot is basically OK, but can be improved even more with a bit of post processing (see my workshop) to improve the contrast and get rid of the noise.

Hi Blair
Nice to see one from your neck in the woods.
He looks sort of sinister, with those yellow orbs staring down.
I would crop the image a lot, bottom and left, to place him more on a third in the frame, thereby enhancing the composition, and strenthening the overall impact.

Indeed, Blair, well hidden here. It seems the owl is in a pensive mood, although our friend Callie found the guy sinister. Great shot.
