[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Coccinellidae is a family of beetles, known variously as ladybirds (Commonwealth English), ladybugs (North American English) or lady beetles (preferred by scientists). The word "lady" in the name is thought to allude to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Catholic faith. Coccinellids are found worldwide, with over 4,500 species described, more than 450 native to North America alone. Coccinellids are small insects, ranging from 1 mm to 10 mm (0.04 to 0.4 inches), and are usually yellow, orange, or red with small black spots on their carapace, with black legs, head and feelers. As the family name suggests, they are usually quite round in shape. Because they are useful, colourful, and harmless to humans, coccinellids are typically considered cute even by people who hate most insects. Some people consider seeing them or having them land on one's body to be a sign of good luck to come, and that killing them presages bad luck.

Hi Leisa,
Great shot, there are guidelines to composition and I make a habit of ignoring them, as you have done here to great effect. Placing the Ladybird (I'm part of the Commonwealth :-)) right in the centre really puts emphasis on the size of the Ladybird and the amount of space around it. Beautifully simple and effective composition. What adds to that is the fact that only the single stem and the Ladybird are in the immediate foreground, and the background is perfectly defocused and buttery-smooth. Just two colours also adds to the simplicity. Details are good and colours rich and saturated. Really an excellent shot!
Regards,
Adrian

Hello Leisa,
I like your composition here, loke Adrian said against the guidlines can be a good thing ;-). Love the color contrast and soft back ground. POV and framing is also very nice.

I have to say this is one photo that is breaking the rule of 3rds but it is so simple yet beaufiful that the rules do not pertain. :) Colors, DOF is just utterly beautiful.

Hi Leisa, great shot of this ladybird. Only one spot, must mean something profound. I love the way the shot is is so well focused on the ladyird and the leaf of grass, but you have managed a perfect DOF surrounding the scene. Very sharp at the POF with great colour definition.
