| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This Elk was too busy eating to worry about me. This as taken near Jasper. At the time you had to be a bit cautious around the Elk as the females were calving. Apparantly they kill more people than bears.
The alternative name for Elk is Wapiti.
Some Elk facts:
Breeding:
Breeds late August–November, peaking October–November. 1 or 2 young born after gestation of around 9 months; Newborn weighs 25–40 lb (11–18 kg).
Habitat Variable:
in summer, chiefly high, open mountain pastures; in winter, lower wooded slopes, often dense woods.
Range:
From e British Columbia, c Alberta, c Saskatchewan, and s Manitoba south to c New Mexico and Arizona, with great numbers in Washington, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado. Also along coast from Vancouver Island to n California; isolated populations elsewhere in California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Michigan. Small numbers in several eastern states, notably Pennsylvania.
The Elk is primarily nocturnal, but is especially active at dusk and dawn. |

Hi Karan
This photo has real quality potential, but in my humble opinion you have cropped the posting far too much on all sides; top, bottom, left & right. Personally I do not mind the hidden beak so much as the deer is doing what most animals does most of the day, and that is feeding. Secondly I think a major portion of the elk is slightly OE, but the whole photo could actually be a little darker. Anyway, the colours are fine, the details are nice and sharp, and the conifers create a fine BG.
Good effort though and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Karan,
Well done on this one, abit too tight cropped in my opinion, but there wer some trees probably in front of this Elk,well done and see, take care
Paul
wow this is cool
Un très bel animal, mais le sujet est cadré trop serré et il est dommage que le museau de la bête soit caché derrière cette branche de conifère.
Mais je sais aussi que parfois on ne peut pas faire autrement.
