NODDING ONION
Allium cernuum Roth

Habitat, dry rocky slopes, open woods and thickets from the Peace River in Northern Alberta and south to the U.S. border.

Allium is the Latin name for garlic, from the Celtic all (hot or burning), because it irritates the eyes. Nodding onion gives off an onion odor when crushed and is one of the better-tasting wild onions. The leaves and bulb may be eaten but do not confuse this plant with the highly poisonous Death Camas which has no onion odor and has flowers in racemes, not umbels.

The crushed bulb were used to relieve insect stings. Bears, ground squirrels and marmots also find them a tasty addition to their diet. There are 500 species of Allium in the world, all of them in hte northern hemisphere, 4 occur in Alberta.

Hello Janice
This is quite a fascinating plant to me. Superb notes!
Well composed and attractively lit frame-filling shot. Crisp deatils and a nicely OOF BG. A fine specimen and a fine posting. TFS

Nice lighting on these onions Janice. I might have gone for a bit more of a side view though, but even so what you have here is very good.

Well done, Janice. Great clarity, especially given the big cluster of flowers here. The lighting is excellent, too. Well composed, cropped, and nicely framed, too.

Janice,
I used to eat them on my hikes; and my hiking buddies said that I would "attract" the bears faster. THEY WERE RIGHT; but that's another story.
This is a great register. Beautiful educative notes.
Thanks for sharing part of our heritage with the world.
Best regards,
Mario. ( J., Great "Chinook" weather.!!!)
