The Downey Woodpecker
Picoides pubescens

A small species of Woodpecker found throughout Alberta. They love mixed woods and love to search for wood boring bugs in trees. They will also eat spiders if they can find them under the bark. They are also attracted to bird feeders with suet and crushed nuts.

They nest in excavated dead wood, both male and female with start excavating and not necessarily in the same spot. Once breeding is close they will choose the most suitable location. Both the male and female will incubate the 4 or 5 eggs for approximately 12 days. Young will usually fledge after 21 days.

I really had to crop this shot to get a fairly close look of this little woodpecker. I don't have a telephoto lens and it's not as sharp as I would have liked.

Nice job with this kind of backlight and on top of it the bird is mainly black!!

Hi Janice,
Nice action shot of this woodpecker. Just a little over exposure on the highlights. Are those wood particles falling down the middle of the image or dust?

Hi Janice

This is a very nice shot of this woodpecker!
Good POV, ni sharpness and very good exposure considerring the very difficult light!
Well done!

Nice job working with the backlight. It brings out nice details, eh? (Like the dust here). If you don't have a long lens you must have been pretty close. So I guess you're good at being sneaky! Yes, you would have gotten a bit crisper shot with a telephoto. (Yet another reason to buy one).

For my camera, Nikon had a cheap 70-300 that I like a lot; I'm not sure what they make for Canon. But I find 300mm much more useful than my 200mm. Birds, big wildlife, the moon, all of those are easier with a 300 IMHO.

Hello Janice,
Nice action picture. Composition and pov are great. As you said sharpness is an issue here. Overall a pleasing picture. TFS

Janice,
You know the shortcomings here;-).
As a thumbnail...hey I'm going to open this one but you can't see the eye doing so..$^$ù^*! And the OE?
Let's talk about positive elements, Janice... great light in BG, good compo.
Have a nice day, Janice!

SALUT Janice
Très belle photo que ce pic mineur. les couleurs ,les contrastes et le BG sont tous parfaits sauf pour la netteté qui laisse un peu a désirer.
Bravo et merci....JP

It is a nice composition. The backlight adds to the effect but alas you have some very bright over exposed areas. One might consider placing the subject a little less in the centre of the frame as it would improve your composition. Well done.
