*****The DEVIL'S HEAD*****
FROM ATOP "BLACK ROCK MOUNTAIN", ACCOMPANIED BY TWO CLOSE FRIENDS, I SHOT THIS IMAGE OF ALBERTA'S "DEVIL'S HEAD MOUNTAIN."
It is located in the Ghost River Valley west of Black Rock Mountain.
It was so named by Peter Fidler in 1792. Because of its shape the Stoney Indians called this 9833' piece of Alberta's geography the DEVIL'S HEAD. Hence, the name stayed. The cliffs are about 250 meters high, the top being fairly flat. In the winter months this mountain becomes an eye-catcher as its cliffs stay black contrasted against the white of the surrounding mountain tops.
George Simpson described it as a, " rude resemblence to an upturned face."
The Cree Indians so feared this escarpment they made propitiatory offerings to its Manitou in the form of pipes, tobacco, and decorated tomahawks on certain of its ledges.
I, personally, made 2 attempts to scale this brute in my days of youthful folly. I FAILED. However, in 1925,
guided by Edward Feuz jr., L.S. Crosby &
J.W.A.Hickson, made it to the top via its west face. Now, a few more brave souls have made it too.
Travelling by train and seeing these great huge walls
on the horizon, one "feels" like this mountain is going to block all entries to the mountains of the west.
Hence the title: " DO I OWN ALBERTA?" or what?

Hi Mario.
Aan amazing panaroma you have chosen to capture. I'm very glad that see beauties of your country. We must thank to you why you shows thosands of kilometers far places from us. And thanks again for informative note. You have used the light very well my friend. Shadow-shine areas make very nice contrast and you framed this scene very well. A superb sight, a superb shot. Thanks for sharing. With my best wishes.

Hi Mario
I like your notes they are very interesting. I think you were standing on Black Rock when you took this shot. I've climbed Black Rock several years ago too. I love the look of Devils Head, it really stands out in our mountain range. I like the shadows the clouds are are doing to the landscape, it gives the shot a dramatic look.

Bonjour Mario

Hi Mario

This is a very beautiful landscape!
The light that edge between the clouds are great and the high view is spectacular. I like the pOV and exposure very much. Also very nice details throughout and excellent framing.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Mario,
What a great note with this photo. And what a shot. The sunlight that was able to pierce through the clouds gave the rock this beautiful color and contrast between shadows and light. Great quality for a scan.

Niek

Hello Mario,
An interesting rock formation, most impressive!
The bit of strange lighting adds to the atmosphere, thick hovering clouds too...
Well composed!
