Common Garter Snake II
Thamnophis sirtalis

Taken at the Ecomuseum, Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec, Canada.

They are called "garter" snakes because of the patterning on their sides, which resembles that of garters once worn by men to hold up their socks.
Unique Qualities: Garter snakes have teeth (but no fangs or poison), and do tend to bite you when first picked up. They also produce a smelly fluid intended to make you release them. The garter snake is an important link in the food chain. It provides food for many larger birds and mammals including hawks, skunks, larger snakes, and raccoons.
Can be Seen: The common garter snake occurs in Canada from Prince Edward Island to British Columbia in a wide variety of colour patterns.
Likes to Hang Out: Garter snakes occupy a variety of habitats including pond and stream edges, wetlands, forests, fields, rocky hillsides and residential areas. They are often observed as they bask on rocks, woodpiles, stone walls, hedges and swimming pool decks.
Likes to Eat: Garter snakes' primary prey are earthworms, frogs, fish, and occasionally mice.
Status: The garter snake is the most abundant and widespread snake in Canada. In the future, garter snakes may face problems, as humans continue to move into their habitat. One sub-species, the butler garter snake is currently threatened in Ontario.

Yes, I like it very much as a rest of your reptiles close-ups. Great job Luc! Very colorful snake with pretty eye and detailed textures on its head. Most people don't like snakes but not me :-)

Such a clear shot I can see a ceiling light and windows in its eye. Great macro Luc, I would think about liking it if I didn't know it was a snake. Good colours too. TFS.

I love snakes...and this is a magnificent portrait.Such clarity!You've done a great job here,as usual Luc.
(They sold these in pet shops in England when I lived there).

Lovely shot Luc, the details are very good, the pose and comspotion are great too. Well done.

Très bon plan rapproché Luc. L'écomuséum devrait utiliser ces photos pour son site web: elles sont de très bon calibre.
Le reflet du néon dérange un peu dans l'oeil, mais c'est très mineur.

Well done Luc. This is very good close up. Nice DOF and POV. Good work and informative notes. Good job

very nice and sharp photo... the eyes is so sharp until the reflection on her eyes can be seen clearly.. also, nice contrast and nice colors too..tfs
