[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I am beginning a series of photographs taken on a trip in early autumn. It was interesting in that no matter how much research we did we seemed to be trying to outrun adverse conditions. We had intended to spend our time in British Columbia but the smoke from devastating wildfires in Washington State changed our plans. The smoke is visible in this picture even though the mountains are splendid.

The western wildfires of late have become more frequent and damaging. They are due, in part, to unintentional but poor forest management for decades. The natural variety of the forests has been altered by natural and man caused forces. Much of the western forests are pine. Even reforestation of logged areas has been with pine. Now with such an abundance of pine, specialized insects have invaded. The western pine beetle is devastating the forests leaving them vulnerable to wildfire. British Columbia and particularly Alberta are actively working to minimize the damage. Unfortunately there is not nearly the same focus in the US. The pine forests of Yellowstone Park were so weakened that much of the park burned in 1988. Now the park is green again with young pine! These trees can fight off the pine beetle assault...but only until they reach a diameter of about 8 inches: Then the beetle will devastate the park once again!

This photo was taken from a canoe. I take only my point and shoot camera in the boat. I know, I know the aperture was too wide but this trip was taken before Niek pounded that knowledge into my thick head. I'm a slow learner but I AM learning lots thanks to TN.

Hi Evelynn, beautiful landscape with lovely colors, well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Evelynn,
I really appreciated your notes; how interesting they are! Before reading them, I was wondering how you could have taken this shot... If you were in the water or not... This is a great POV with excellent details, compo and exposure. I don’t know what Niek told you (he must be right as he always is) but I think this is a great picture with very “unfortunate” texture created by this smoke.

Your notes and picture are a great contribution to this site. TFS,
Claudine

Hi Evelynn,
The canoe POV really made this view special. It makes me feel I am actually floating on top of the water. It also creates a good depth becuase I have to follow the stream to see the rest of the scenery. It is a pitty that the smoke is blocked the clear view of the mountains, but on the other hand it also gives some mood to the photo.

Since you do not have a stong FG interest the aperture isn't that bad at all. A F11 is really not needed. So one or two stops would have been more then enough.

TFS.
Niek

Hi Evelyn,
Sad to hear what is going on in this beautiful national park.I do hope it will survive the onslaught. You have caught some lovely colour and light in this one.The DOF is not so bad...its emphasised the foreground more.Good detail and clarity. The river leading you in is eyecatching.Well done and a good evening.

I really like this shot, Evelynn.
It has interesting geometry. : )
The waterway is a good lead-in to the center of the picture.
The little hill makes a good anchor for the composition,
and I find all the lines (mountains, water, greenery) radiating from it make sort of a web to trap my eyes. Cool!
It is awfully sharp for a shot taken out of a bobbing canoe.

Hi Evelynn, nice shot. Why was the aperture too wide? Remember your focal length is very small and so your DOF is much great than an SLR. It's a nice scene, perhaps a little too warm with the colour balance? Well done.

Hello Evelynn,
Great autumn colours, the dry grass is very typical this time of year!
Interesting X-type composition, good light and wonderful details...
Great sense of depth makes this one pop!
Greetings,
Pablo -
