The Saga Continues! This is the 6th part of a story that still has a few parts to go! A story about a storm building on Lake Erie. December 1st, 4PM can be seen here ( If you go back in my gallery you will find five previous photos building up to this and more information on Lake Erie)I was going to make a collage of photos but felt they told a better story seeing them full size. Lake Erie is where I live . In this photo I am looking SouthEast, the direction the wind was coming from. The state across that 58 miles of Lake would be Pennsylvania USA.
At this point when I checked the marine forecast ( I find since we live on the Lake its much more acurate to read the Marine forecasts) Anyhow they had now upgraded our Gale to a Storm. When I first heard the word "Storm Warning" I didn't think much of it.. Back in Vermont that just meant you were going to get a bunch of snow, or lots of rain. Well here on the Lakes its as close to a hurricane as you can get without actually being one. The winds were they were expecting we were going to get would be 50KNOTS with higher gusts. (50 Knots is about 60MPH this is what can happen...(Whole gale trees uprooted; considerable structural damage occurs a hurricane is actually anything over 73 MPH...) AT this point I did walk over to the otherside of the road that is in front of my house , the water was now splashing at the banks which normally we have about 15' of beach inbetween the bank and the water. I was really glad at this point that we also have a 10' bank ..never would I complain about having to climb down the stairs to the water again! I was also happy that the wind was southwest and was going to turn west before approaching that storm and we have alot of protection from wind in that direction for our house...whew..if it had been south...oh my..the waves on the lake at this point dont' look that high from this photo because I live in a shallow part, you can actually walk 100' feet out and not get past your waist..the waves on the lake were now 12'....

Stay tuned for what happens next! :o)
A cliff hanger TrekNature photo!

Hi Donna

I haven't been on the site much lately so I missed the others but I have just been back through your photos. What a story..I am on the edge of my seat waiting to hear what happened next. The storm-tossed water looks amazing. We are used to quite mild weather over here but even we had a tornado in London last week

Hi Donna,

Interesting colours you captured here. It is hard to believe that this is a lake. It looks like waves on the ocean. You captured the fierceness of the storm very well. It must have been hard to keep the camera still in a wind like this.

Hi Donna,
gale force winds and you are out side taking pictures. you are daring.
Another great documantary shot of the storm. Very well captured, one really gets a feel for the intenseness of the wind.

Donna,
What a great piece of work. Both notes & photos.
Congratulations.
What a fierce storm. Dont have to be there. Can "feel"
it right here in my house in Calgary, Canada. That's
how great is your capture of this subject.
Best regards,
Mario.

Hi Donna,
You absolutely make me curious on what is going to happen next. One thing that I am sure is that you are alright.
Photographically, this one is better than the previous one [#5]: better in sharpness and composition.
Keep them coming!

Hi Donna,
No surfers? Makes me think of the movie Point Break w/ Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves where the highlight of a surfers life was catching the big ride on a fifty year storm.
12' waves? Boy, that would be cool if you were able to get a shot that showed that...;-) I'm ready for the cliff hanger...
Nice pic!
TFS,
Dave

That is a rather dramatic shot Donna. I viewed the series with interest. One can see how shallow the lake is by the amount of sediment the winds have churned up. When one thinks of the French voyageurs boating some of these lakes in their birch bark canoes ... wow.

Bonjour Donna
Belle presentation ,les couleurs sont très bonnes, belle composition
J'apprecie les beaux paysage et tu nous en présente un avec un beau Lac agité.
Au revoir et merci....JP

Hello Dona,
Storms are very impressive by their amazing power, especially when you live near the water. I hope you guys will be prudent in your boat are you still taking it in winter? Have you heard about Laura Gainey's tragic lost in the Atlantic sea at the large of Cape Cod? They stopped the researches yesterday night at 6h PM. What a pity... Anyway, this is a beautiful capture with excellent exposure. This looks very impressive and I like those very natural colors. This weather looks like a fury. TFS,
Claudine

Ricardo

Beautiful image Donna with warm colors, in spite of the storm that you relate us in your notes.
I like the contrast of the front of the scene without light with the illumination of the waters and the fog of the bottom.
Excellent point of view with good election of the framing and your wonderful complementary notes.
Be careful with these captures... Ricardo
