Family: MACROMIIDAE
English name: "Illinois" Swift River Cruiser (Northeren Form)
Scientific name: Macromia illinoiensis illinoiensis Walsh, 1862
A female
Length: 70 ~ 75mm
Wingspan: 80 ~ 85mm

Flying Season:
Early March to early Nov. in eastern area of United States,
Early June to early Sept. in eastern area of Canada.

Habit:
Forages by flying long distances along roads and through open forest, sometimes methodically up and down rows of corn, until sunset. It sometimes soars high among swarms of other dragonflies. Males fly patrols 50-plus yards long, mostly near the bank, and primarily in the morning. At cool temperatures they have one of the fastest sustained cruising speeds of any of our draonflies, but at warm temperatures they fly by alternate flits and sails on raised wings.

Hi Kevin,
This is a good sharp shot of this River Cruiser. I like the diagonal presentation and the lighting. I find the BG a bit disturbing but you can't do much about that without a lot of cloning, but I wouldn't even try that.
TFS, best wishes, Ivan

Hi Kevin,
a nice and sharp picture with good diagonal composition.
Nice colours abd good DOF but agree with Ivan about the busy BG.
Well done.

As an expert on the subject of odonata, your images have a sort of professional quality to them, Kevin. What I mean is that in addition to their high aesthetic qualities, they also portray arrays of features that would help one to describe them in precise scientific details. For example, even a layman like me can tell exactly at what spots one may expect to see the dabs, stripes and patches of yellow color on the body of a Swift River Cruiser :-)!
A stunningly sharp AND beautiful image.

Hello Kevin,
I like a lot the eye detail captured on this dragonfly.
The effect created by the DOF is a very interesting pattern of light and shadows.
The composition works pretty well with this hanging scene.
The frame gets the best of the photo, with that tiny white line.
Nice shot, congratulations,
JM
