For the past several days I've been documenting a severe storm we had on Lake Erie. For those that haven't read about it yet. Lake Erie is 240 miles long and 58 Miles wide, it is bordered by Ontario, Canada to the North (Where I live) and New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio, USA to the South. Seeing as thought the lake is so shallow when the wind blows the water moves in the direction of the wind currents. This particular day the wind was blowing from the South Westand during the most severe part of the storm moved to a westernly direction which was pushing the water in the direction of where I live in Eastern Lake Erie. The water levels are measured frequently as it is necessary for the shipping industrys as the ships adjust their cargos and ballast in coordination with the depths of the water. There is a "norm" for what they base the water levels at and then they will announce when the water is above or below that norm. To show just how powerful the storm with the wind strenght at a steady 58 miles per hour can do. The water level at Toledo was a -fourty two inches while the water level in Buffalo was +sixty nine inches a 9 feet,4 inch difference. Ships were anchored all over the place not only because the winds were so strong but also they couldn't transit the detroit river to Lake Erie because there wasn't enough water left! For more information about the storm read my December Storm Photos. This one was over the next morning around 9am they finally cancelled the storm and gale warnings and I very soon saw a parade of ships as they were leaving the anchorage at Long Point. There was damage for sure ..I'll report about that ..tomorrow..:o)

Thanks for viewing my gallery and for your comments on my photos!

Hermoso cielo. Los colores son preciosos y los detalles de esos rayos de sol que se filtran entre las nubes son magníficos.
Muchos saludos, Donna.

Hi Donna, this is a very nice shot of the sun breaking through the sky over Erie, but the story is even better. Lake Erie has to be one of the most dangerous large bodies of water in the world. With its shallow long nature, when you get a strong wind as you've experienced it sets up a sloshing bathtub affect. Long point with its shifing sands can be especially treacherous. Keep safe.

Thanks, John

Hi Donna
C'est une très belle presentation de ce beau ciel qui commence a ce dégager, les couleurs et la netteté sont très bonnes et la composition est superbe .
Au revoir et merci pour le partage....JP

Hi Donna,

Interesting notes. Good capture of the sun rays. Good idea of having the horizon on the bottom of the picture. Just a bit to dark but necessary to be able to see the rays.

Donna

I've not been around for a while, so haven't seen any of the others in the series, but I really like this one and the detail and light in the clouds is great. I think I would have included a touch more of the lover black band - just be a 1mm or so and maybe even cloned out the something on the horizon to the right becuase it is very unclear as to what it is. But I too would love to have this enlarged on my wall!

I was thinking that if you increased the contrast slightly more, you might get a much stronger light ray... just a passing thought.

God to see your work again - I'm missing TN at the moment, but time is in very short supply at the moment. Hopefully in the new year I can catch up again.

Emma

Peace and calm seem to make a dramatic appearance here in the shape of those shy sunrays peeping out the rents in the clouds with golden edges to them, Donna.
A fitting finale to an interesting theme.
TFS.

Hi Donna,
Glad that finally the clouds were giving ways for sunlight to penetrate to earth's surface.
Very nice series of thematic pictures: enjoyable and educational.
Thanks for sharing the photos.

Hi Donna,
The sky is opening up and the first sun beams are peaking through, this is a wonderful ending to your storm series. Very well composed, gorgeous sky scene with wonderful texture and colors.
Thanks for the wonderful documentary on the storm.

Nice shot. I like couds and sunrays and this is very good. As we know the story behind this picture (a very interesting documentary!) Im glad and almost relieved even here in Norway, to see that the storm has passed and the sun is shining though to you again!
It is a happy moment :)

Hi Donna,
Somehow I´ve missed this beauty. Such beautiful colors and such beautiful rays of sunlight peaking through the ominous looking clouds. I agree with Emma on the horizon and adding some more contrast. But besides that a very beautiful photo.
TFS,
Niek

Hello Donna, I'm not a big fan of sky-only shots but this has some nice qualities. Good colours and arrangement. Well done.

This panoramic view of the storm clouds is wonderful. I love how you can just glimpse the bright sky colors behind the clouds, well done!
