"STORM BREWING OVER CALGARY"

Is was a clear beautiful sunlit day in Calgary on 12th. July 2006. So we decided to go to the "Prince's
Island Park" to photograph wild ducks or wild life in general that roam those gardens.

No sooner we got there we noticed these "menancing clouds" on the horizon; these clouds reminded us of the similar occassion when we took no action a few years ago and a downpour of baseball size hail hit our unprotected cars causing damages in the millions of dollars to many vehichles throughtout the city.

Now, we rushed back home ... put our car in the garage, stayed indoors because of a:"STORM BREWING OVER CALGARY" ; it was afterall a false alarm.

Those nasty clouds flew over our beloved city causing
no harm to anybody.

The moral of the story: Better be SAFE than SORRY.

This is a very beautiful cloud, it's huge! The texture in the cloud is great, you exposed the scene very well. Lovely composition aswell.

Regards,
Pieter

These monster cumulus are wonderful. The contrast between the bright white of the thunderhead and the blue sky is great. The layers give the viewer a feeling that they are watching this cloud grow. Well done.

Incrível a formação dessas nuvens. Parece que vai cair uma tempestade. Que bom que dessa vez não caiu granizo no tamanho de bolas de baisebol.

Um abraço!!!

Hi Mario

Sorry my friend, but rather late than never. What an incredible cloud you have captured here. A monster of a Cumulonimbus formation similar to the clouds we get in our highveld area in the Gauteng province. I suppose you being a retired aircraft pilot must have seen many spectacular clouds in your life.

Since I’ve also posted a photo of a cloud formation, a couple of days ago, I’ve done some research on clouds and their formation and actually learned quite a bit of interesting facts about clouds. Without going into too much detail I can tell you this about Cumulonimbus clouds.

Cumulonimbus is a type of cloud that is tall, dense, and involved in thunderstorms and other bad weather. The clouds can form alone, in clusters, or along a cold front in a squall line. Cumulonimbus clouds form from cumulus clouds. Actually there are quite a number of different Cumulonimbus cloud formations. These includes:-
Cumulonimbus calvus,
Cumulonimbus capillatus,
Cumulonimbus praecipitatio,
Cumulonimbus virga,
Cumulonimbus pannus,
Cumulonimbus incus,
Cumulonimbus mammatus,
Cumulonimbus pileus,
Cumulonimbus velum,
Cumulonimbus arcus,
Cumulonimbus tuba.

In summer, through the atmospheric processes of strong diurnal heating, the lower atmosphere becomes warm and moist, whereas the upper unstable atmosphere is colder, as low as -56°C. Convection forces the air at the ground level to rise, and it condenses into water droplets. With the release of latent energy caused by water condensation, convection is further accelerated and a towering cumulonimbus cloud is forming (that sometimes can reach 12 km height in 30 minutes, while millions tons of water are lifted).

Artistically, technically, and compositionally you have done excellent work here as it is not easy to capture all that contrasts and colours of a cloud. Although the colour of a cloud is really just white one can see all the shades through the spectrum up to grey and ultimately black depending on the density of the cloud. Your photo show some lovely contrasts and very sharp details. Great exposure control rendered a perfect cloud shot.

Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Howdy Mario...

You were about a week late for CANADA Day eh!

But Prince's Island AND Thunder Clouds brings back many memories!

But in consolation I have to say that storms come in may shapes and forms , and in many places as well. So as photographers we need not fret!

Nice clear crsip image. How about some more info on what you used to shoot this. Did you use a filter?

Hi Oscar Mario!
Your accumulating cumulus is so vivid and "fluffy" - with some cirrus hiding behind it!
I like the lighting of this "Snowwhite" and your nice note!

Hello Mario
Happy New Year !
You captured a beautiful thunderhead. The clouds are billowing up so high in the sky. The clouds are so white with shades of blue and grey.

Were you here in September 1991, this is when we had a terrible hail storm and many roofs, cars and business were damaged....I remember well.

Hi Mario. This is very clear with beautiful colours. Well seen and delivered. Those clouds look quite violent, but due to the colour, could be a wolf in sheep's clothing! TFS. Murray.

Hello, Airies. You have done a brilliant job of capturing the detail of this cloud without overexposing the white. Somehow you managed to also properly expose for the foreground trees, which I am really impressed by. Did you somehow do this electronically, to tone down the dramatic contrast? Hello, neighbor, I live in Lethbridge.

Hi Aires ,
it is wonderful and unbelievabe shot.,
excellent details with amazing colours.it is my favorite.
thanks for sharing

It rained golf ball size hail one year in Pokara, when I was there. All the birds lost their homes and families. Roofs caved in, trees were stripped, it looked like snow. Some had cores and layers, some were wads of smaller balls. My freind's shop and house leaked, then it melted and flooded everywhere. Your clouds are beautiful, hail is beautiful to see, but not nice. Lovely to see, harmful on the head!

Hallo Mario
What a sensational view of these billowing clouds. A photographic moment seen and the opportunity well taken. A well exposed cloud formation. Seeing them develop is fascinating scenery, wondering what will come out in the end, rain thunder or shine. A cloud formation well focused, composed and presented. Thanks for sharing.
Enjoy your day.
Anna
