This is Medicine Lake in Alberta/Canada. I loved this lake and the excellent mountain peaks which act as a perfect backdrop. I didn't shoot in RAW back then (09/2005) and I spoiled the exposure. Off and on I worked a year on pp-ing this picture. Do you like the result?

General info from Wikipedia.org:

Medicine Lake is located within Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. It is located approximately 20 km southeast of the townsite of Jasper, Alberta. Medicine Lake is approximately 7 km long and is a relatively shallow lake. The lake is part of the Maligne Valley watershed which is mainly glacial fed.

Medicine lake is a geologic anomaly in the sense that it is not actually a lake but rather an area in which the Maligne River (flowing from Maligne Lake into the headwaters of the Athabasca River) backs up and suddenly disappears underground. During the summer months during intensified meltwater runoff the lake (which during the winter months is a meandering frozen river) fills to levels which flucuate over time and with the runoff events. Much like a bathtub that is filled too fast for it to drain, it becomes laden with water (lake) until it can slowly drain as the tap flow (runoff) is reduced (river). The underground system is extensive and during the 1970s researchers used a biodegradable dye to determine the underground river's extent. The dye showed up in many of the lakes and rivers in the area to the point where it became clear that the underground system was one of the most extensive in the world.

It is rumoured that one of the researchers has promised a case of Dom Pérignon to anyone who can gain access to this underground system.

Medicine Lake also boasts a healthy population of rainbow trout and brook trout and is a fly fisherman's paradise.

Wildlife is surprisingly abundant along this high altitude lake. Grizzly bear, black bear, mule deer, caribou, wolves, moose, and mountain sheep are some of the larger mammals that frequent the lake area during the summer season. Bald eagles, and osprey also frequent the area and live off the fish populations.

Ricardo

One of your traditional landscapes Pieter with the plus of the medicinal dose.... much more reading the animals that you can find there.
Beautiful point of view with soft tones and appropriate integral focus.
I like the elected framing with a sober presentation.
A trail is perceived among the clouds... can be the trail of an airplane?.
My best greetings... Ricardo

Hello Pieter,
This is a very beautiful scenery with excellent exposure. This is funny, I come from Canada and I have never been there :-) I like those well saturated colors, POV, composition and great DOF. This lightning is superb, TFS,

Hoi Pieter,
Prachtig werk, complimenten.
Groet, Ruud

Hi Pieter,
What a relaxing view! Colors, light, composition are great!!
TFS, José M.

A beautiful scene here Pieter. I'd say maybe try a touch more contrast in the BG mountians, but overall I'd say it's pretty darn good.

It's a beautiful place, and a nice image of it.

Hi Pieter,
I think this is a striking landscape.
The composition is very lovely, with just the right amount of water, mountain and sky. The details are very clear and the light is just great.
Those peaks are truly beautiful.
TFS this very soothing, yet grandiose scenery.

Hello Pieter,
A beautiful landscape, captured with wonderful details!
Well composed presentation with a fine feeling of depth...
Postcard quality, in the best sense of the term!

Hoi Pieter,
Groeten,
Niek

Hello Pieter,
majestical view of enormous depth and meditative silence.
Subtle colours, and perfect details without any trace of postwork sharpening - just perfectly smooth.
The text on the bottom, however, in my opinion does not do a proper job at all here for this excellent image. It looks a quite a bit rough, and disturbs the atmosphere.
Thank you! Best regards,
Peter

Hi Pieter

What a breathtaking sight! The view across this lake and towards those magnificent mountainf is outstanding!
I really like the composition here, with the gradual increase of the ground...(i don't know if it was your intention or not :) - the small bank and "island" from the left FG, then the forested hillside from the right and peaking with those magnificent steep clifs in the BG.
Also the poerfect exposure here allowed you to contain all these lovely and well saturates colors and tones, the impecable DOF gave you excellent shapness on the details throughout the entire frame and the great use of the polarizer enhanced all these past mentioned features adn gave you just enough contrast, too.
GREAT work!

Bravo and TFS

Really perfect this landscape. Not too sharp, just right. The point of view is excellent. The landscape is so peaceful, so inviting.

Hi Pieter,
Goede compo and lichte kleuren; vooral blauwe lucht is mooi.

Hoi Pieter,

Groetjes, Nel

Well Pieter, I give you some of that Wow! back because this is truly a stunner.. I could do with some of that elevation in my landscapes and this looks magnificent, truly. I may have cloned out the smoke trail but other than that its fantastic. Very well done.

Hey Pieter
You wouldn't know this was poorly exposed and had loads of dust, it looks great.
It has a very pleasing composition and a calm, clean look, due to the shimmering water and the smooth yet sharp look of the rocks on the large mountains. The smooth clouds also add to this clean look. The vapour trail of a recently passing jet spoils this just a little.
Your EXIF doesn't say, but I'm guessing you had the camera in either 'landscape' mode or just in 'P' because I can't imagine anyone manually selecting F/10. :)

I could not help but smile when I read your intro again. After the week I have had, I will be glad to get away to my medicine again...

As for your's it is beautiful and fantastic. And I'm glad you have put the work into it becuase it is really good to see it... There is so much that can be said about it, but it has all been said before, so I won't waste any more of your time other than saying thanks for showing it and sharing it.

Hi Pieter, lovely scene and mood you captured here. No nits... just a pleasure to look at.

There's nowhere like Banff and Jasper to photograph sweeping vistas. You captured a grand one here. You asked about the pp work. What bothers me is the color of the sky. My monitor is generally pretty accurate on color and this blue looks unnatural to me. I also would like any blue in the water to be a little closer to the same family of the blue of the sky. I tried a workshop. Of course much of this depends on monitors and personal opinion.

Hi Pietje Puk :-)
Wow, this is beautiful. Great title too, very fitting. Wonderfully detailed image, well exposed and great natural colours. Technically spot-on but what I really like is the sense of calm you've captured, real tranquility. This reminds me of being in the Himalayas, there is definitely something about high altitude lakes and mountains. Great shot.
Cheers,
Adrian
