Le Gros-bec errant

Cet oiseau :
voit son bec prendre la couleur des bourgeons au printemps
peut engloutir des quantités étonnantes de sel brut ou de gravier fin et de terre imprégnés de sel
entretient une étroite relation prédateur-proie avec ce fléau des forêts de résineux qu’est la tordeuse des bourgeons de l’épinette
peut avaler 96 graines de tournesol en cinq minutes

Le Gros-bec errant (Coccothraustes vespertinus) est un passereau dodu et vigoureux, de la grosseur d’un Merle d’Amérique, mais dont le cou et la queue légèrement fourchue sont beaucoup plus courts. Proéminent et épais, son bec conique est vraiment très gros pour un oiseau de cette taille. Le plumage du mâle adulte est éclatant, avec le dos et le ventre jaune doré, teinte qu’on retrouve dans la raie sourcilière. Les plumes du dessus de la tête et du cou font penser à du velours d’un brun riche et chatoyant. La queue est d’un noir de jais, tout comme les ailes, à l’exception d’une grande tache scapulaire blanc neige. Les juvéniles mâles se distinguent par les taches sombres qui mouchettent cette zone blanche.

La femelle adulte est plus terne. Le corps est d’un gris fumé tirant sur l’argent, avec du jaune sur les flancs, la nuque et le croupion. Le noir de la queue et des ailes, cernées de jaune vif, a des taches blanches clairement marquées. Le ventre est d’un gris un peu plus pâle, tandis que les tectrices sous-caudales et la gorge sont habituellement chamois et blanc argent. Au moment où les jeunes Gros-becs mâles ou femelles sont prêts à prendre leur envol, leur plumage ressemble suffisamment à celui de leurs parents pour qu’on puisse identifier leur sexe.

En hiver, le bec a la couleur de l’os, mais il subit un changement radical dans sa pigmentation dès le début du printemps. Il est alors du même vert que les bourgeons et les jeunes feuilles ou que les aiguilles qui apparaîtront bientôt aux extrémités des branches des épinettes et au milieu desquelles l’oiseau construira son nid quelques semaines plus tard. Le Gros-bec errant se dissimule dans la ramure et ne sort, pour observer les environs, que sa tête et son bec dont la couleur se confond avec le vert des jeunes cônes d’épinette ou de sapin baumier. Nous avons là un bel exemple de mimétisme protecteur.

Wow! This one, just like you last one, have been two really EXCELLENT posts! Did you change anything in your equipment or your photographing technique, because the boost in quality is most significant!
I would really want to congratualte you, my friend, for theese amazing pictures.
The sharpness and saturation here on this beautiful grosbeak are fantastic, the POV excellent and it also gave you a great angle for the bright and beautiful blurry BG in the back.
The framing is very nice, too, as is the overall composition.

This is a great shot. Colors are very good and the focus on the bird is sharp. Compositionwise I wouldn't have placed the bird in the dead centre, but rather a little bit more to the right to give him breatingspace. The blurred background is great and really makes the bird stand out. Well done & TFS!
