Morning has broken on the first day... of 2007 in Nova Scotia < New Scotland > over Big Island.

Clearly not a shot at the crack of dawn. After seeing in the New Year I didn't wake till about mid-morning with this very very soft light. Due to a heavy cloud cover we were spared the glare of a clear solar blast, which is kinda nice for people who may have a headache. Last night the scene was identical with the almost full moon, except for the warm pastels here caused by our energetic solar source. [ Notice the sun is also "almost full" in this shot ... ]

Happy New Year my friends, let's make it count!

Note:
"Morning Has Broken" is a hymn with lyrics written by Eleanor Farjeon (1881–1965). It was written in 1931 in Alfriston, in the south of England. It is used by many denominations. [ Often erroneously attributed to Cat Stevens, who recorded a popular version on the album Teaser and the Firecat *** ].

Children in England would have heard Farjeon's hymn in primary school. Scottish children sang the old Gaelic hymn, "Child in a manger, Infant of Mary" to this tune. The Scottish hymn predated "Morning" and was written in Gaelic by Mary MacDonald before being translated into English. For Scottish children it was a Christmas hymn. I am indebted to my friend David Bean who years ago - when I was blown away by the Teaser and the Firecat - already told me that he grew up in Britain with "Morning Has Broken" [in school] .

Lyrics for "Morning Has Broken" follow:

Morning has broken, like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird
Praise for the singing, Praise for the morning
Praise for them springing fresh from the word

Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dew fall, on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness, where his feet pass

Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the one light, Eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning
God's recreation of the new day

repeat 1st verse as often as you like ...

*** I SO hope that Yoosuf Islam also sings this song in Arabic!

Hi Jaap

Ha-Ha-Ha, what a pleasure to read this very informative note. Do you really think Yoosuf Islam would do this in Arabic? Very doubtful though, but keep on hoping.

Anyway, it is an interesting shot of the sun rising higher and higher while trying its utmost to penetrate the dark clouds and shine some light over this dark scene. Don't worry though; it will shine yet again for the darkness can never conquer the light. After all darkness does not really exist (think about it) because it really is only the absence of light. You can not throw a switch and activate the darknes, but you can throw a switch to turn on the light or to switch off the light. Light exist. It would be appropriate to repeat the last verse you quoted here.

Well done and TFS.
Best regards
Loot
