Porcupine feeding – Elk Island National Park

During winter porcupines do not hibernate. However, they don’t move far and feed within 100 m of their den. When the weather is dry in winter they will feed at any time of the day. Porcupines are slow and deliberate feeders, relying on their nose rather than their eyes to guide their selection of plants. Being shortsighted and slow moving, the porcupine is not too difficult to approach once found. This one was rather benign and let me take about one dozen pictures of him without any signs of frustration. Thanks, Spikey!

Hi Hanna,your porcupine is nice and sharp in its focus(no pun intended).The lighting sure is tough and is a bit harsh.Do you have one with its' face looking at you?I have been hoping to find one of these creatures to photo myself.
